When it comes to the mighty genre of doom metal, few bands hold as much weight as the Swedish powerhouse Candlemass. Considered one of the pre-eminent bands in that subsect of heavy metal, they were once voted the best Swedish hard rock band of all time by Swedish Rock Magazine and were nominated for a U.S. Grammy. Yet none of that mattered when everything came tumbling down and they split with frontman Messiah Marcolin.
That all changed, however, when Candlemass and Marcolin reunited earlier this year at the RockHard Festival in Athens, Greece. It was a momentous occasion and thanks to the efforts of director Yasin Hillborg, that reunion is front and center of a new documentary that he’s hoping can get funded through Kickstarter.
His project, Nine Lives Of Doom, seeks to follow the “40-year rollercoaster ride of doom, break-ups, and reunions.” The film not only features live and archival footage of the band, but it will also feature interviews from some big players in metal, including Tobias Forge (Ghost), Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth), and Anvil’s Steve “Lips” Kudlow, among others.
In total, Hillborg is hoping to raise $279,151 (or 2,695,000 SEK) in 39 days. So far, just 41 backers have offered $4,636 of their funds to the cause.
You too can contribute to the Kickstarter by visiting the page today. If you do, depending on the pledge level, you’ll gain access to some kick ass bonuses, including exclusive merch, access to the film, and more.
