Life on the road as a touring musician certainly isn’t easy.

By now, I’m sure you’ve seen the headlines that longtime Hollywood power couple Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman are officially over, after Kidman filed for divorce nearly two weeks ago in Nashville, Tennessee. They had been separated and living apart since the beginning of summer when Keith moved out.

The rumor from several sources is that Kidman was trying to save the marriage, and that it was Urban who wanted out, but either way, it’s sad to see this nearly two-decade marriage come to an end.

Of course, you never know what’s really going on behind closed doors, but the two of them always appeared very much in love, and they often spoke publicly about their seemingly strong marriage and life together. They share two daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, and it’s just heartbreaking all-around, especially for their kids.

They were married for 19 years, and first met in 2005 after meeting at the G’Day USA gala in Los Angeles. Urban talked about his wife’s “otherworldly era,” saying he was incredibly nervous to talk to her and felt like he was meeting a “real life princess.” He eventually worked up the nerve to ask for her number, though it still took him a while to actually call her.

Once he did, their connection was instant and the rest is history. They were married the following year in 2006:

“I was trying to play it cool, but inside, I felt like I had snuck into the royal ball. Simply because Nic has such a truly otherworldly era about her, and I felt a bit like I was meeting a real life princess… and despite all of that, I did manage to get her phone number on a tiny piece of paper, and I carried that number in my pocket for well over a week.

I’d pull it out and look at it… I was just scared. I was nervous to call her, and as prone as I might have been at the time to all sorts of delusional thinking, even I couldn’t stretch that to think this extraordinary would ever see anything in a guy like me. And that’s not me being humble, that’s literally how I saw myself and her. I did, as you’ve probably figured out, work up the courage to finally call her.

We started talking, and we just talked and talked like we’d known each other our whole lives. It turned out that this mystic creature was really just a wide eyed, vivacious, giddy girl from the Sydney suburbs, and despite being born in Honolulu, she was utterly Aussie through and through.”

With news of the divorce, many people have been speculating as to what exactly went down, and the video of Keith Urban (allegedly) abruptly hanging up during an interview on Australia’s Mix 102.3 with Hayley & Max in the Morning has resurfaced, as the host got pretty personal in asking Urban about some rather inappropriate topics, to be honest. Reports suggest he wasn’t happy with some of his wife’s work like her recent film ‘Babygirl,’ though I’m sure there that wasn’t the sole reason for the split.

There are countless other theories about what happened, but Urban may have hinted a marital troubles in an interview shared by the Daily Mail and reported by Page Six, where Urban talked about his “lonely and miserable” life on the road in an interview for the new reality series called The Road, which premieres on October 19th.

The show follows 12 artists competing as opening acts for Urban at music venues across the country, and in an interview filmed prior to the divorce announcement, Urban opened up about just how hard his lifestyle can be and why he does it:

“Where do we start? It’s a calling, and you’re going to do it or you’re not going to make it.”

He explained how being a famous touring musician isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be, saying it’s often extremely lonely and difficult to be away from family, which leads you to question why you’re even doing it in the first place, because it comes at such a cost:

“When you wake up on a tour bus at 3:30 in the morning and you’re sick as a dog, you’re in the middle of nowhere and you’ve got to play your fifth show later that night, and you haven’t slept, and you miss your friends, and you’re missing your family, and you’re completely lonely and miserable and sick — and you say to yourself, ‘Why am I doing this?'”

Urban says the answer is really quite simple:

“The only answer can be: Because this is what I’m born to do.”

I don’t necessarily think he was discussing his marriage in particular, it’s clear that being away so much can wear on any relationship, and I’m sure over the years it didn’t always make their life easier, but to be fair, Kidman was also traveling often to work on big projects and movies, so they were both away from home, and each other, a lot it would seem.
