The duo we absolutely needed.
Today, Kashus Culpepper and Sierra Ferrell teamed up for a gorgeous new duet called “Broken Wing Bird,” which is just a powerhouse team and they certainly show off their impressive vocals, which is what you hope for when two talented artists jump on a song together.
Culpepper is an Alabama native who made a splash last year when he released “After Me?,” which is currently playing on Americana radio. The 27-year-old Navy veteran has already opened for people like Charles Wesley Godwin (what other kind of endorsement could you need?), and he has an incredibly unique, gritty and powerful voice that stops you in your tracks no matter what he’s singing.
He has put out consistently good music, and this new single comes out almost a year to the day that he put out his debut single, so it marks a special time in his career after recently making his Nissan Stadium debut at CMA Fest, his Grand Ole Oprey debut earlier this week, in addition to making his national TV debut on CBS Saturday Morning tomorrow. It’s so exciting to see artists with a much more traditional sound getting mainstream recognition, and I think Culpepper is at the very beginning of what promises to be a very long and successful career.
“Broken Wing Bird” was written by Culpepper along with producer Brian Elmquist and recorded in Muscle Shoals, and he says he was inspired by the classic country he grew up on, so the goal was to replicate that feeling you get on something like an old Willie Nelson song… that’s probably why I like this one so much.
He adds that having Sierra as his duet partner just takes it to the next level, and I couldn’t agree more. She elevates everything:
“I’ve always loved the sound of classic country. It brings me peace whenever I hear it. I wanted to write a song that replicated that feeling. And the same feelings I got when I would listen to all those old Willie Nelson songs.
Something about those tunes made me feel like I was on a back porch late afternoon drinking sweet tea or something. And having Sierra Ferrell on this song makes it even better for me.”
The lyrics find them lamenting the inevitable end of a relationship, as he recalls a girl he once loved who had a “broken wing,” which held her back from “reaching the sky”:
“Broken wing bird
Hanging off of my window sill
Gonna love you until
You fly away
The song that I heard
Reminds me of a girl I know
Before she crashed into the ground below
And stopped reaching for the sky”
It’s really a beautiful way to say that, and like I said, these two as a duo make so much sene, and I’m always going to be partial to a classic country heartbreaker like this. For me, these kinds of songs are what make country music so special, and I couldn’t be happier seeing Sierra and Kashus in particular doing it justice like this.
