One final show in his home state before hanging up his hat.
John Michael Montgomery, the ’90s country singer, is slowing down and ready to live life off the road.
Throughout his career, Montgomery has released 10 studio albums, scoring seven #1 hits in the ’90s while being best known for ballads like “I Can Love You Like That” and “I Love The Way You Love Me.” But he also achieved major radio success with his upbeat, auctioneer-style tune, “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)” — which has become one of his fans’ favorite tunes over the years.
The 60-year-old Kentucky native has had a career that most dream of, and has created a country music dynasty of sorts with his family and extended family. Montgomery is the brother of Eddie Montgomery, lead singer of Montgomery Gentry, and the father of country singer Walker Montgomery. He’s also the uncle to Dillon Carmichael and the father-in-law of Travis Denning, who married Montgomery’s daughter Madison in 2023. Pretty stacked, eh?
So it only makes sense that for his final concert, he makes it a whole family affair.
Last year, Montgomery announced that he planned to reduce his touring schedule, with only a handful of dates scheduled for 2024. In a post sharing that he was slowing down, he also took a second to thank his fans for supporting him throughout his 30+ year career.
“It’s been a wonderful run for me from the beginning over 30 years ago in 1992 when my first song Life’s A Dance was released to radio I think either as a 45 vinyl or on a cassette tape, CDs had not quite taken over the market yet and the internet was still in its infancy.
It amazes me where it is today. I’ve been fortunate and blessed to be able to do what I love for so many years so please join me on my journey as I say goodbye to the road life. And thanks so much for your support for the last 3 decades, it’s meant so much to me.”
At the start of 2025, Montgomery kept his word that he was slowing down and ready to be off the road, announcing his The Road To Home farewell tour. Montgomery still had a handful of tour dates left on his 2025 roster, but today he announced his final show, which will take place in his home state of Kentucky.
On December 12th, Montgomery will take the stage at Rupp Arena. Joining Montgomery on stage will be his brother Eddie Montgomery, Walker Montgomery, and Travis Denning.
“I stepped on a tour bus for the first time in 1992 and haven’t looked back since, but now it’s time to bring it all back home for my last concert, and I can’t think of a better place than Rupp Arena. I wanted to celebrate this occasion with my family, so I invited some of them to perform with me. We are going to have a lot of fun and end this ride in a big way.”
It’s always sad to see legends of country music slowing down, but this final concert is one hell of a celebration of Montgomery’s career, and performing with family members makes this night even more special.
Ticket presale begins Wednesday, July 30, at 10 am. General on-sale tickets go on sale Friday, August 1, at 10 am.
