If you’re not familiar with Joe Stamm yet, you should change that.
Hailing from the Central Illinois town of Metamora, Stamm has been touring for well over a decade at this point, and ever since the release of his Feel Like Me EP in 2016, has amassed an impressive and extremely underrated catalog of music that proves his songwriting prowess.
Between the Joe Stamm Band and a handful of solo releases, Stamm’s prolific career has produced over half a dozen EPs and five full length studio albums, all of which deserve to be heard and appreciated. But out of all of the music he’s released thus far in his career, his latest album features his best work yet.
Titled Little Crosses, the 12 track record showcases Stamm’s diverse sonic capabilities, weaving seamlessly through upbeat country tunes like “Temporary Town,” slowed down ballads such as the heartfelt track “Hold On To Me,” ominously hard-driving rock songs like “Forward,” and just about everything in between. But perhaps more importantly, Little Crosses showcases Stamm’s innate ability to connect with his fanbase through universal truths and experiences communicated with deftly clever lyricism.
With every song on the album written by Stamm, and the final track “Wolf Man” being the only co-write, Little Crosses covers an array of topics that range from personal introspection to external observations, all of which, though, seem to be rooted in Stamm’s existential thoughts spurred by all of those little crosses on the side of the road, as detailed in the album’s title track “Little Crosses.”
Produced by Al Torrence, who is best known as Charles Wesley Godwin’s chief guitar player and producer, Little Crosses is a masterful project and further prove that Joe Stamm deserves to be heard by the masses. And hopefully these songs are just the catalyst he needs to make that happen.
