Jelly Roll & Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Meet For The First Time & It’s Beyond Heartwarming: “Brotherly Hug 10 Years In The Making”

This meeting was a long time coming.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson finally met one of his musical idols: Jelly Roll.

Jelly Roll’s music resonates with the souls of many, and while most believe his messages strike the deepest with those who have faced similar struggles throughout their lives, that is not always the case. His music can resonate with anyone, regardless of the magnitude of their struggle, or how successful they have become. Jelly Roll’s music can also lift your spirits on a day when you’re feeling down, with his preacher-like messages uplifting you through a grey cloud.

One of those people who found Jelly Roll’s music during a low point in their life was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Johnson has been a fan of Jelly Roll for almost a decade, championing him since the early days of his country music career. Johnson has talked about how much he loves Jelly’s music multiple times, even boasting about his record Whitsitt Chapel.

My guy is blowing up the industry and moving the crowds. He’s a real authentic artist who brings PASSION & MANA to his music – and he brings a joy and gratitude that can only come from experience and living the life.

Many years ago, before he blew up, his music helped me get a through a rough patch in my life. I’ll never forget it.
Grateful. Proud of you my brother – keep doing it big and keep lifting the people up.”

However, after being a fan of Jelly Roll for years, the two never crossed paths. While the two have never been strangers, both have spoken positively about each other numerous times, but they have never met in person. That was until the two finally got to embrace each other in a big bear hug on the set of American Idol.

The Rock posted a heartfelt story and video sharing how meaningful the meeting was.

“Several years ago (roughly 2017) I was going through a very hard thing at the time, I was struggling. My mental wellness turned into my mental hellness. Many of you know the drill, you put on ‘the face,’ show up to work, smile and get through it.

Perhaps not the healthiest thing to do, but it’s what I was used to doing at the time. Then a song came on through my headphones one morning on a random shuffle playlist. ‘Only’ from Jelly Roll.

The lyrics rocked me. Hard core. The words moved me so much that I reached out to Jelly. I said you don’t know me and I don’t know you, but this song of yours is helping me through some stuff I’m dealing with. I just called to say thank you, brother. Our bond was born.”

As a gift to share how thankful The Rock was for Jelly and his music, he gave him a very special gift. A postcard from a restaurant that used to be in Nashville, given that both have ties to Music City.

“The gift I gave Jelly when we finally met, is insignificant to the world, but something I just knew would mean a lot to him and he’d appreciate. It’s an old, and cheap postcard of a little motel called the Alamo Plaza in south Nashville. When I was 15 years old, I was forced (family was evicted) to leave Hawaii and make it to Nashville to live with my dad. That didn’t work out so I wound up living with a stranger in this little spot on Murfreesboro Road that has since been torn down and no longer there.

Downtown Bruno was that stranger’s name and to this day, he’s one of my best and most special friends.

Just like Jelly. A very special friend.”

Jelly was taken aback by the gift, which was “real old school Nashville history,” insisting that The Rock needed to keep it for himself. But The Rock insisted that he wanted him to have it, signing it for him. The two men sat and chatted for a while, and just as The Rock has been a supporter from day one for Jelly Roll, Jelly then told him that his public support was the motivation for him to keep going.

He shared that early in his career, he had conversations with his wife, Bunnie Xo, about the possibility of having to return to school to earn his degree and secure a 9-to-5 job so that he could provide for his children. But after seeing The Rock post one of his songs, he knew that if he could captivate the actor’s attention, he could captivate others.

Jelly even shared that The Rock was in his inbox, congratulating him on his first award before his own mother did.

Just as The Rock wrote in his caption:

“Every once in a while we all get sliced up by life, but it’s amazing to see what kind of blessings and people that God and the universe will put in our lives to help us heal through our pain.”

And both of these men were saving graces in their respective lives. That’s powerful.

Check out the video of the two meeting before you go. It’s beyond moving. You might even need a tissue or two…
