Jake Worthington Details How A Carolina Bear Hunt Led To Meeting His Wife In Oklahoma

Everyone knows that every good marriage starts with a bear hunt.

Jake Worthington stopped by the podcast to talk about his sophomore album When I Write The Song, how he loves sad country songs but has been scared to cut them in case they come true, walking up and down Broadway and listening to the live bands, how Nashville has never lost its magic, why he still believes in making a full and complete album, his love for Zach Top and the traditional country revival, being from Texas and his influences there and so much more.

One of the more interesting tidbits that came from the interview was the story of how Worthington met his wife, Sophie. They’ve now been married for just shy of three years, and funny enough, they met thanks to a hunting trip that Worthington was on:

“I met my wife out in Oklahoma. Low and behold, for about four or five years, I was going out to Oklahoma to hunt and fish and write songs. I found peace out there, and still do… (We met) deer hunting.”

But that deer hunting trip only happened because he and a friend, whose name is “Cornbread,” went on a bear hunt together.

After Worthington found out that his good friend had participated in his fair share of bear hunts, the country singer decided to join in on the fun. And it was a successful hunt, considering they bagged and tagged a bear. It’s also successful because it led to a deer hunt out in Oklahoma:

“I went and did my first bear hunt out in Carolina. I was pickin’ with a guitar player out of Texas named Cornbread Baker – he’s a great guitar player. He’d always tell me about these bear hunts, and I’d say, ‘Well I want to do that stuff.’

We did a week over in Carolina. We hunted 14 acres. It was a beautiful piece of the mountain that we got to work. Spent a week out there and killed a bear. I promised him a deer hunt out in Oklahoma.”

That deer hunt took place not long after Jake and Cornbread’s Carolina bear hunt.

Worthington called in a favor with someone he’s close with: Fellow country music artist Rodger Springer. They were able to hunt on his property out in Oklahoma, and while they were there for a week or so, the future wife of Jake Worthington, Sophie, was invited to hang out during some downtime in the hunting.

Jake took Sophie hunting the morning after they hung out, and the rest is now history:

“We went over to Rodger Springer’s place at the time, and he’s like family. He’s good to me. We went deer hunting for a week. One of those nights… we like to sit around and cook and eat and play music, and we invited Sophie for dinner and to hang out. She came on over, and I took her hunting the next morning. I ain’t been hunting since.”
