“It shouldn’t take a tragedy for us to love each other.”

On Wednesday, September 10, conservative media personality and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University.

In the wake of his death, an outpouring of support came around the country from the likes of President Donald Trump, the New York Yankees, who held a moment of silence before their game Wednesday night, Joe Rogan, as well as a plethora of country stars, including Jason Aldean, Parker McCollum, John Rich, Kane Brown, Randy Houser, Aaron Watson and more.

Given that concerts and festivals were ramping back up with the weekend approaching last night, more stars took the time to stop their shows not only to talk about the senseless killing but also the 24th anniversary of 9/11. With Aldean honoring Kirk with a pre-concert tribute and lengthy speech honoring Kirk’s legacy, HARDY condemning the act and calling the state of the country a “f****** mess” and Gavin Adcock showing his support while simultaneously starting a “Charlie Kirk” chant with the crowd, the call for peace in the country community has been plentiful.

During their headlining set at Born & Raised Festival in Pryor, Oklahoma, Treaty Oak Revival became the latest group to speak out in defense of Kirk’s murder. Speaking to the crowd before the performance of their certified gold hit, “Ode To Bourbon,” frontman Sam Canty told the crowd how the video made him sick to his stomach, serving as a reminder that there was still evil in the world:

“It made me sick to my stomach, and it made me realize that there is still evil in this f****** world out there, everybody. We need to be careful, but I know if there’s evil, there’s also plenty of f****** good in the world. And I know because I’ve seen it by going out there and talking to every single one of y’all and hearing y’all’s story.”

With a heavy heart, he’d then go on to make connections between the 9/11 attacks and Kirk’s murder, noting the undeserved acts of violence resulted in the loss of innocent lives and hoping for unity seen after the terrorist attacks 24 years ago:

“Especially being the day of 9/11, I want y’all to know that the tragedies that happened yesterday is the same tragedy that happened 20+ years ago, somebody and a group of people lost their lives who didn’t deserve it. But we came together and we stood united as a people and as a country because that’s what f****** America does every single time.”

Finally, Canty finished with one of the most poignant calls to action heard from an artist so far. Clearly sensing how much division there is in the country today, he encouraged the crowd to love each other, not in the face of tragedy, but all the time. He’d then go on to dedicate the performance of “Ode To Bourbon” to the nearly 3,000 victims of 9/11 and Kirk himself:

“I want y’all to know something. It shouldn’t take a tragedy for us to love each other and for us to get along and be happy. So this next song is about remembrance, and I dedicate  [it to] those who lost their lives today in the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and to anybody else, Mr. Charlie Kirk as well.”

As a song that has subsequently become all about remembrance, Canty undoubtedly picked the perfect song on a day filled with so much mourning.
