Could Ed Sheeran’s country music era be upon us?
The “Shape of You” singer has previously expressed in interest in making the move from his home in Suffolk, England, to the United States. Sheeran has also said that a move to America would also mean a genre shift for him… to country.
In recent years, it has become somewhat of a norm for pop artists to cross over into the country music space. Singers like Post Malone and Beyoncé have made really big splashes trying on the genre for size, and one could argue that detours into country have been lucrative for both artists.
It seems like Sheeran wouldn’t mind to see if the boots fit, so to speak. When he sat down with Alex Cooper for an interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the four-time Grammy winner said that if he pulled up his roots and decided to plant them in Nashville, he’d want to go country. And not only that, if he went country, he’d stay there:
“I think there’s (a chance I do a country album). I guess so. From living in Nashville, you can’t just dip your toe in. If I’m going to do it, I’m going to do it, and that’s it.
I’ve made country songs in the past; they’ve just never come out. I have to do it properly, and once you transition to country, you can’t transition back. Once you’re there, you’re there.”
Of course, this is not the first time he’s referenced country music. He’s a known friend of Luke Combs, he’s performed at Tootsie’s, and he said in 2023 that he wanted to try country music. But unlike many pop stars trying to cash a check, he has a DEEP appreciation for country music.
And it feels like it might be that time for Sheeran to put his money – and his time and talent – where his mouth his. The singer-songwriter joined another podcast (The 2 Johnnies Podcast) and revealed that he’s gearing up to transplant himself and his family to the United States:
“I’m just about to move to America. I feel like I might be the only person moving to America. I’m going on tour there for a while and I have a family so I can’t dip in and out. We’re going and settling there.”
Obviously, that quote is some subtle commentary on unhinged celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O’Donnell moving out of America following the election of President Trump. Sheeran doesn’t seem to mind the politics, and is apparently diving head-first into the U.S. of A.
He cited that the move is mainly tour-related, but if he moves to Nashville like he’s planned to for years… he might not ever move back. And that could mean that Ed’s country shift could come sooner rather than later.
And just in case you were wondering, it doesn’t sound like Sheeran would live anywhere else other than Music City if he left England. He waxed poetically about moving to Nashville, and going country, in that Alex Cooper interview I mentioned earlier:
“Nashville is like my favorite city in the States. It’s always been like my end goal. I’m going to move to Nashville and transition to country, but I think you just have to do it properly. It’s a genre you have to really respect, and it’s not just a dip in and out.”
And I respect that viewpoint from Ed Sheeran.
