Raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina, Sam Burchfield’s music reflects the rich hills, valleys, and rivers that flow through the region. Now in his thirties, living in the mountains of North Georgia, Burchfield still finds inspiration from the land around him and intertwines the roots of Appalachian folk music into his Americana-based sound.
Since 2014, Burchfield has consistently released music, with five albums to his name. In 2020, Burchfield released his project Graveyard Flower, which features the ever-popular tune “The Last Of The Honey Bees,” which put his music on the map among Americana/indie fans. Five years after its release, it’s still a fan favorite tune.
Burchfield has been releasing new tunes this year, including a stellar EP titled “Songs My Wife Wrote.“ Last month, he released “Spirit of the Night,” revealing that he’s working on a new project, simultaneously announcing his sixth record, Nature Speaks. While details of the album are limited at the time of writing, he shared that “Spirit of the Night” is the lead single off the record, and is a strong start.
That strong start continues with his second single, “Stay (Betty Blue).” The acoustic tune highlights tender lyrics about standing by the one you love through life’s highs and lows. With many artists acknowledging mental health struggles in their music, Burchfield penned this tune as a message to those with partners struggling that even in the rockiest of storms, the right lover will never waver in their love.
“We all have different battles to fight. The battle for mental health is brutal. I wrote this about staying with the ones we love through the hardest times. It is the hard times where we discover our capacity to love others.”
Produced by Jason Kingsland, with the help of Sam Burchfield and Ryan Plumley, the simple melody lets the convicting lyrics shine:
“And if you get lost on the other side,
I’ll plant roses in your mind
If you go mad and hurt yourself
I can lick your wounds until you’re well
I wanna stay
I wanna stay
I wanna stay…”
The imagery that Burchfield poetically paints depicts a love that many often dream of. And for those lucky enough to experience a lover who is with them through thick and thin, “Stay (Betty Blue)” will resonate deeply with them. Sometimes when you’re in the trenches, all you need to hear is the one you love reassuring you that they are not running away. “Stay (Betty Blue)” is that reassurance.
Sam Burchfield has come out of the gate hot with the first two singles from Nature Speaks, and I can’t wait to hear what else is in store for this upcoming record. “Stay (Betty Blue)” will be available everywhere tomorrow, July 25th, but we’ve got an early first listen for you right here.
If you find yourself playing this one on repeat quickly, don’t say we didn’t warn you.
