With Thanksgiving coming up in just a couple of days, I’ve been thinking back on some of the greatest shows that have occurred during the Dallas Cowboys halftime on Turkey Day over the years, and there have actually been tons of great country artists take the stage.
Of course, for me, nothing will ever top Dolly Parton’s 2023 halftime performance, and people like Lainey Wilson and Luke Combs have recently done it and done it well, but Eric Church’s headlined the Red Kettle Halftime show at AT&T stadium in 2016, and it was epic.
He took the stage nine years ago at as the Dallas Cowboys played the Washington Commanders (formerly Redskins), where the Cowboys won 31-26. Chief ran through hits like “Record Year,” “Drink In My Hand,” “Pledge Allegiance to the Hag,” “Give Me Back My Hometown,” “Springsteen,” and of course, gave the fans an afternoon to remember with a rousing performance.
And being that this was the year after Eric put out what is still one of his best albums, Mr. Misunderstood, excitement around him headlining the show made it even more fun to watch and he definitely picked some of his best songs for the fans in Texas and people watching on TV at home, too.
Of course, since 1997, the Dallas Cowboys have hosted extravagant halftime shows over the holiday game as a way to kick off the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign with a bang, so to speak. Some of the other greats that have performed in the past include country music icons like Randy Travis, Clint Black, Toby Keith, and Carrie Underwood, in addition to the more recent, aforementioned country stars like Luke and Lainey.
This year, Post Malone will take the stage in his home state of Texas, and I’m sure he will wow the crowd with what will be a dream-come-true moment in his career, and he previously called it an “honor” to be part of:
“I’m from Texas. I grew up a Cowboys fan and have been watching this halftime show for years. It’s a real honor to be part of the Red Kettle Kickoff with The Salvation Army and the Dallas Cowboys and help bring hope to so many people.”
It’s going to be a big game as the Cowboys will take on the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, November 27th at 3:30 PM at AT&T Stadium, and I’m excited to see what he has planned.
But until Thursday, you can take a look back at Eric’s 2016 performance below (and a closer view on the video here):
There really have been some great ones over the years, and you can watch Dolly’s below, which is of course my personal favorite:
@legacyrecordings can we all take a moment to appreciate how AMAZING Dolly looks in the DCC outfit? #dollyparton #thanksgiving #halftimeshow #9to5 #dcc ♬ 9 to 5 – Dolly Parton
