Danno Simpson Drops Two Must-Hear Singles Ahead Of Debut Album Release
What’s better than a lead single? Two lead singles. It’s not the most popular move, but when you’re Danno Simpson, you do what you want, and nobody will question music this good. Two lead singles. It’s not the most popular move, but when you’re Danno Simpson, you do what you want, and nobody will question music this good. A few weeks after announcing his debut album The Kill Joy, and just in time for his performance at the official tailgate for Post Malone’s Denver stadium show last week, Simpson released new music for the first time in over a year, in the form of two lead singles off of the new album.
You may recognize one of the two singles, “Days Gone By,” from Simpson’s four-track, stripped-back OurVinyl Sessions EP released in April 2024. An incredibly well-written and thought provoking song, “Days Gone By” takes on a new life with a full band backing Simpson’s existentially contemplative lyricism.
The other single, “Hotel Hillcrest,” is a harder-driving sonically and perhaps serves as ode in ways to a now-defunct DIY venue in Fort Collins after which the song is titled. While the narrator never speaks in the first person, the single seems to be an introspective reflection on past immaturity given Simpson’s ties to the Fort Collins music scene.
Check out both of the new singles below along with the rest of the tracklist for Danno Simpson’s 10-track debut record The Kill Joy, due out in its entirety on July 11.
The Kill Joy Tracklist:
“A Song About What I Can’t Have”
“Hotel Hillcrest”
“Heartless”
“Days Gone By”
“Down on My Knees”
“Am I Stoned or Not Breathing”
“All the Times Before”
“Leave Me Where You Found Me”
“Gold”
“When the Stars Fall”
Simpson draws inspiration from the greatest outlaw songwriters to ever put pen to paper, such as Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt, among others, and it shows in his music. Born in Texas but now calling Colorado home, Simpson made a splash in 2020 with his first EP Honest Work which featured his biggest hit to date, “Honest Work.”
Rooted in storytelling through thoughtful lyricism, and with a killer backing band and an intricate instrumental approach, the proof is in the music that Danno Simpson could be one of the next up and coming country music artists to breakthrough to the big time. Hopefully his debut record The Kill Joy is just the catalyst needed to take this thing to the next level.
While I hope more tour dates are yet to be announced as Simpson promotes the album’s release, there are a handful shows already announced for this summer and fall that see Simpson headlining some local venues, opening for Charles Wesley Godwin in Montana, and making an appearance at the Peacemaker Festival in Fort Smith, AR alongside the likes of Stephen Wilson Jr., Southall, Sam Barber, and more.
Get out there and catch Simpson live if he’s coming to a city near you, and if not, be on the lookout for more tour dates and new music coming your way from one of country music’s most promising up-and-comers.
