Gossip sessions aren’t just for the girls… and they’re good for the soul.

If you’ve been online at all over the last couple weeks and are a sports fan in any capacity, you’ve probably seen clips and articles from the recently released Prime Video series Earnhardt, which focuses on the life and legacy of the late, great NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt. Featuring interviews from Dale’s friends, family, and obviously his son, Dale Jr., the documentary also features never-before-seen footage of Dale during his racing career from both his personal and professional life.

It’s an incredibly interesting, and nuanced, look at Dale Earnhardt the race car driver, the man, the friend and the father, and Dale Earnhardt Jr.  and his sister Kelley played a huge part in the production of the series, in addition to being heavily featured in it, telling stories about their dad and memories that were both good and bad.

It seems as though it’s been a huge hit, even with people who aren’t overly familiar with Dale Sr. or NASCAR, which is awesome, and I think the human interest aspect of it is extremely compelling, and something pretty much anyone can relate to.

But hopefully, it will also bring many new eyes to the sport, but either way, I’m content knowing that so many are learning about the icon, Dale Sr., and what made him so special. Of course, his son, Dale Jr. is also an extremely successful driver, and over the years, he’s become a pop culture figure himself, and he’s made some famous friend over the years as a result.

Dale Jr. and his wife, Amy, recently launched a new podcast called Bless Your Hardt, which is a really great listen and peak into both of their personalities and life together. Amy is really funny, and she always has something funny to tell about Jr. or one of their two daughters, but it was WWE star Stone Cold Steve Austin who took the spotlight during this weeks episode.

Amy said they were driving to their beach house this week, when a phone call came through Jr.’s phone from Stone Cold. She was surprised to see him calling, and got a kick out of the fact that he wanted some gossip and behind-the-scenes info on some of the characters featured in the doc, specifically the feud between Dale Sr. and Darrell Waltrip back in the day. They respected each other as tough competitors, ultimately, but they were tough rivals and didn’t always see eye to eye, which DW talks about in the show.

Amy concluded that Austin just wanted to gossip a little, and obviously, he went exactly to the right man for the job in Dale Jr.:

“We’re driving three and a half hours from home to here, and about halfway in, his phone’s always tethered to the car because he’s playing music. A phone call pops up, and it says Steve Austin. And he goes, ‘Oh, Steve Austin’s calling.’ I’m like, Steve Austin? Stone Cold? Stone Cold’s calling while we’re driving down to the beach? What is this life? How cool is this for you that this is just your normal.

He answers the phone, they’re chit chatting, I can hear Stone Cold because he’s talking so loud, and he’s wanting to talk about the documentary and DW, and he’s asking all kinds of questions about ‘Well DW, why is he so mad?’ He literally just called to chit chat and kind of gossip, to be honest. I’m like, wow, this is so neat. You know, I was grateful I got to listen in. That doesn’t happen in everybody else’s life. and it’s neat to have the perspective I do sometimes, so I can see all the things you get to do.”

Jr. said it had been years since the two of them had talked, but they had first met when Austin came to his studio in Mooresville, North Carolina to be on his Dale Jr. Download podcast:

“You know, something like the documentary happens, and all of a sudden, all these little quirky things start happening, and then it kinda teeters off back into regular life for a while. But yeah, that was cool, man. I hadn’t talked to Stone Cold Steve Austin in years. I did his show, probably three or four years ago. He just wanted to ask a couple questions about that documentary.”

Amy got a kick out of the fact that he called to get “a little tea”:

“He was so curious… he just wanted a little tea.”

I have to agree that I find it as funny, and cool, as she does, and while Jr. is super humble in how he tells this story, he’s still a big celebrity, and I would’ve loved to have been a fly on the wall to hear them going back-and-froth on the phone.

Sounds like Stone Cold wasn’t a fan of some of DW’s comment in the doc, but I’m sure Jr. explained how deep the rivalry went and even though I think he does respect Sr. for the legend and icon he is, once a rival, always a rival, you know? It’s what made the sport so exciting back then, and we could use a little more of that now I think…
