He manifested it.
At this point, there’s absolutely no denying that Charles Wesley Godwin is a certified star in today’s alt. country scene. With three incredible studio records under his belt (along with a live album on the way), continual placement on high-profile festivals throughout the year and high praise from his peers, fans and critics alike, the West Virginia native has cemented himself as a staple throughout multiple subgenres/scenes in the genre.
Like many younger artists, of course, there was a time where he wasn’t quite the juggernaut he currently is.
Flashing back to 2022, Godwin was at the cusp of a breakthrough. After releasing his debut album, Seneca, in 2019 and his sophomore album, How The Mighty Fall, in 2021, Godwin began turning heads with tracks such as “Hardwood Floors,” “Seneca Creek,” “Temporary Town” and more. The buzz famously allowed him to begin opening up for Zach Bryan, most notably on his early Ain’t For Tamin’ and American Heartbreak tours in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
Over the weekend at AmericanaFest during an acoustic set, the “Another Leaf” singer opened up about writing his biggest hit to date, “All Again,” during that time period.
As Godwin explained, he waiting out a lightning delay in Richmond, Virginia while on tour with the “Something in the Orange” singer when the chorus came to him.
“This one [was] also written for the most in a van going from Kansas City to Chicago. This one started during a lightning delay. There’s a amphitheater outside the NASCAR racetrack in Richmond, Virginia, and we’re sitting there waiting for this lightning delay to end. We were opening for Zach Bryan in June of 2022. You know it was weird sometimes when they pop into your head, and this one did.”
During the delay, he couldn’t get the chorus out of his head, which prompted him to ask his piano player to record it in his voice memos. About two weeks later, driving from Kansas City to Chicago, he would finish the song up.
“I didn’t have my phone with me, and Max, our piano player, had his phone. And I was like, ‘Max, take your voice memos out real quick. Let me put this down here, so I don’t forget.’ So that’s how it started. And then I think it was two weeks later, driving from Kansas City, [I] finished it up.”
He’d then explain that he called his wife after arriving in Chicago to check in on how she was doing. After learning she had been pretty miserable at her job at the time, backed by the excitement of penning “All Again,” Godwin would half-jokingly tell her that he wrote a song that will allow her to quit.
“I remember calling my wife. We were playing Joe’s on Weed Street in Chicago that night, and I called her back home just checking in on how her day at work went and all that. She was venting to me about how things were going at work, and she was pretty miserable at her job. I was like, ‘Well, I wrote a really good one today. I think it’s gonna get you out of that job.’ And I was just talkin’ sh*t. There was no reason for that to be like a solid statement in June of 2022.”
Turns out that there was actually a whole lot of truth to that statement. Though “All Again” itself didn’t propel Godwin to the heights he’s currently at (his signing to Big Loud Records in March 2023 before the song’s release also played a big role), it would eventually sell over 500,000 units and become his first-ever certified gold record in February 2025.
