These days, it’s hard to choose just who has the best live show.
With names like Zach Bryan, The Red Clay Strays, Sturgill Simpson, Treaty Oak Revival, Eric Church and more being lauded for their electric performances night in and night out, there’s stiff competition in the genre. Throw in some more underrated names such as Silverada, Turnpike Troubadours and Sierra Ferrell, and the list gets even more complicated.
Another name that should always be at the top of these rankings is none other than Charles Wesley Godwin, and luckily, he’s giving everyone a taste of their shows with the release of his first-ever live album, Live From Steel City.
Just announced, Live From Steel City will release on Friday, September 26th, and feature 23 songs from Godwin’s show at Stage AE in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, back on September 14, 2024.
Discussing the creation of the record, Godwin said he wanted to capture the energy that’s present in his live shows, noting the impact the crowd has on their performance compared to being in the studio:
“I’m so pumped to share the live show the boys and I have curated in bars, clubs, theaters, amphitheaters, arenas and stadiums over the last several years. There’s just something about the energy of a live crowd that you can’t replicate in a studio, and I think that shines through on this album in a big way. Stage AE was a special place to be on September 14, 2024, and come September 26, 2025, everyone can experience it with us. Let’s go!”
The tracklist itself is nothing short of a crash course on Godwin’s influences and deep discography. In addition to standout tracks from each of his three studio albums, such as “Hardwood Floors,” “Temporary Town” and “All Again,” the West Virginia native is also bringing the heat with covers of Chris Knight’s “The Jealous Kind,” Tyler Childers’ “Whitehouse Road,” Merle Haggard’s “Ramblin’ Fever” and John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” a song that has become his concert-closer for years now.
Couple the aforementioned songs and covers with other stellar tracks such as “Jesse,” “Another Leaf,” “Seneca Creek” and the Bruce Springsteen-inspired, “10-38,” and you have yourself one hell of a live album.
As previously mentioned, Live From Steel City releases on September 26th. However, Godwin is giving fans a sampler of what’s to come this Friday with the release of three setlist staples: “Cue Country Roads,” “Family Ties” and “Hardwood Floors.”
As one of the most talented bands in the entire genre, Godwin and the Allegheny High are set to deliver one of the best live albums in recent memory here. If you’re a fan of Godwin or live records in general, you’re not going to want to miss this one.
