Earlier this month, a normal night in the Boulderfields in Central Okanagan (British Columbia, Canada) turned into the site of an emergency rescue mission. Some hikers were walking near the popular rock climbing spot when they became concerned after hearing what they thought were repeated cries… possibly for help.
The two hikers called 911, and said they were hearing “repeated cries” in the area, which prompted the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue team to quickly jump into action. COSAR wasted no time getting team members to the area, and even had crew that were already in the area drop what they were doing to investigate the loud, distress noises that were reported.
A drone team was sent out, and two Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers deployed to the area. All that to say that it was a full on response by COSAR after they received the 911 call. Early responders also heard the faint yelling off in the distance that the two hikers reported, so they continued to follow the sound.
Central Okanagan Search and Rescue say that they eventually discovered where the “distress signal” was coming from. There was a lone camper with a tent set up out in the middle of the woods, and he was not in trouble… rather very much at peace. That’s because he was singing loud and proud into the surrounding trees, and the sounds of his Nickelback serenade were bouncing off the Boulderfields – effectively sending out a false distress signal.
COSAR Search Manager Duane Tresnich had this to say about stumbling upon the camper and finding out that he was the source of the noise:
I can’t imagine how embarrassing it would be to sing in a public place and have the cops called on you because… people thought you were dying, or at the very least incredibly injured. That’s a sign if I’ve ever seen one to hang up the singing for good, or maybe try out a different band other than Nickelback. It’s always worth looking into other artists or bands that could better suit your vocal range.
And I guess you could call this a happy ending, only because no one was really in danger. It was just a guy out in the woods, thinking no one could hear him, singing Nickelback’s greatest hits into the great outdoors. COSAR made a post about their “rescue mission,” and thanked the concerned hikers that called in, even though there was nothing to worry about:
“COSAR would like to thank the folks who called it in – it could have been serious. That area’s full of tricky terrain and bike trails, so better safe than sorry. And remember, our services are always free. And the money you save could be spent on singing lessons.”
And just to be clear, singing Nickelback loud enough for others to hear could, in fact, be considering a cry for help. Just thought I’d get that parting shot in there…
Wonder what song it was? Gotta be “Savin’ Me,” right?
