Definitely not in Kansas anymore…
It’s been a rough few months for Billy Ray Cyrus, starting with his disastrous performance during President Donald Trump’s inaugural ball back in January. People were concerned for his well-being, and even his son Trace Cyrus released a message begging his father to get help.
Since then things seem to have soured between the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer and his son, with Trace recently calling his adopted father “washed up” and “evil” in a since-deleted Instagram post:
“You’re the lamest man to ever walk planet Earth. Honestly embarrassed to ever have considered you my idol. The best thing to come from your downfall is it made me go into beast mode. I refuse to be a washed up, delusional, evil person when I’m old like you. Christ is King. Get right with God. You need it.”
But it hasn’t all been bad for Billy Ray, who also debuted his new relationship with actress Elizabeth Hurley a couple months ago. The two seem to be having a good time together, and…well, he’s dating Elizabeth Hurley, so it can’t all be bad.
His latest song though? Yeah, it’s bad.
Billy Ray took to social media tonight to announce that he would be releasing his own cover of the classic “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from The Wizard Of Oz, along with guitarist Micki Free and producer Buck 22, to benefit the National Museum of African American Music here in Nashville:
““Somewhere Over the Rainbow” has always represented more than just a melody to me… it’s a symbol of equal opportunity for all.
I’m honored to be a part of this special version with Micki Free and Buck 22 to benefit The National Museum of African American Music… a place where the history, pain, power, and beauty of music lives on.
Thank you Billions Streams. Thank you also to Elizabeth Hurley, D Man, Miley Cyrus, Noah Cyrus, and Braison Cyrus for being the treasure at the end of my rainbow. Music still truly changes everything.”
(In case you didn’t catch that, he conveniently left Trace out of his post).
The song officially drops this Friday, but Billy Ray gave us a teaser on social media and…well, it’s rough:
Yikes.
And over on TikTok, people quickly began to sound off with their thoughts on the song…and it was brutal:
“What the hellyraycyrus”
“My guy… it’s time to wrap this up.”
“Bro you’re winning by having Elizabeth Hurley let the music go.”
“My brother in Christ, you good?”
“Gonna lie this is fire”
“I’m so confused, Billy”
“Billy…. this song is about to go viral in a bad way”
“Is this your Chris Gaines era?”
“Why is he cosplaying as someone divorced aunt”
For some reason though, Silver Dollar City amusement park invited Billy Ray to come perform the song live in their park, which drew its own reaction:
“Hopefully not while we’re there”
“Silver dollar city what r u doing here girl”
“are we serious”
I just really want to know how this came about. Who wanted this to happen, and decided that Billy Ray Cyrus was the man for the job?The post Billy Ray Cyrus Teases A Cover Of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” & The Comments Are Brutal first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
