Roughly a day after news began circulating that Baroness‘ founding drummer Allen Blickle had passed away, the band’s frontman John Baizley confirmed the disheartening news and shared a heartfelt message to the benefit of his former bandmate.
“It breaks my heart to have to share the news that my dear friend, creative partner and former bandmate Allen Blickle passed away a few days ago. I’m still in shock that he’s gone. We ask for understanding as his family and this band process his passing and grieve his loss. Allen, I love you and miss you. I treasure every moment we shared.”
Blickle was a major player in Baroness’ early history as a founding member. He helped form the band in Savannah, Georgia alongside frontman Jon Baizley back in 2003. He remained the band’s drummer for ten years, playing on 2007’s Red Album, 2009’s Blue Record, and 2012’s Yellow & Green.
Blickle remained in the band until March 2013, just a few months after he was injured in an August 2012 bus accident while touring Europe. Nine passengers were injured in the accident, with Blickle and then-bassist Matt Maggioni each suffereing fractured vertebrae. Both Blickle and Maggioni would leave the band just a few months later.
There’s no information at this time as to what might have caused Blickle’s passing at just 42 years old.
We at MetalSucks would like to extend our deepest condolences to Blickle’s loved ones and former bandmates during this incredibly difficult time.
