That was a close one… a little too close.

Disaster almost struck just before the college football seasons, and it could have very easily spelled the end for a TV streaming provider. Fans of football have waited a long, long time to see the gridiron glory return, and YouTube TV almost went and ruined it for everyone.

College football season – and football season as a whole, for that matter – is built for rotting away on our couches on the weekends consuming an inordinate amount of calories and deleting a concerning amount of beers. It’s not about sitting on the edge of our seat and waiting to hear if our TV provider struck a deal with the network that airs the football games.

The edge of football fan’s seat is reserved for 2-minute-drills and last second field goals.

YouTube TV apparently didn’t get that memo, and instead of locking up FOX and all of the channels underneath its umbrella long before the season started, they waited until last second to try and strike a deal. They had every sports fan that has YouTube TV cursing to the heavens when they put out this statement earlier this week:

“To our members: In order to bring you the best in live sports, news, and entertainment, YouTube TV partners with content providers like Fox. Our agreement with Fox is nearing renewal, and we’re actively negotiating to reach a fair deal for both sides, as well as our subscribers.

Our goal is to keep Fox content, including channels like the Fox Broadcast Network, Fox News, and Fox Sports on YouTube TV. We hope to reach a deal, but we want to be transparent that if we’re unable to reach an agreement by August 27, their content may become unavailable.”

Yeah… thanks for the transparency, but no thanks (you know what I mean?). Just give me the football.

Like many others, I switched over to YouTube TV to try and officially cut the cord. Remember when cutting the cord was a feasible, less-expensive way of doing things? Before every network made their own streaming service and ruined it for all consumers? The modern day media consumption model has every TV customer longing for the days of cable.

And people would have been directing some really nasty things towards YouTube TV if they lost FOX days before the college football season, and a week before the NFL season. If you’re reading this, YouTube TV, you simply don’t mess with people’s football. If any provider should know that, it’s you all, since you are the exclusive home of NFL Sunday Ticket.

I’d imagine that they heard some of the outcry and threats of customers canceling and going elsewhere, so YouTube TV intelligently decided to strike a deal (for the short term) that keeps FOX on YouTube TV. They made the official announcement shortly before their deadline to come to an agreement:

“Update: We’ve reached a short-term extension with Fox to prevent disruption to our subscribers while we work on a new agreement. We’re committed to advocating on behalf of our members and will keep you posted on our progress.”

Crisis averted.

But listen here YouTube TV, and listen well. Do not, under any circumstance, let this happen again. Any network that carries football games is of the upmost importance and priority. Let’s leave the buzzer-beaters to sports, shall we? You can’t be giving college football fans heart attacks right before their favorite college football teams give them heart attacks. The post YouTube TV Reaches Short-Term Agreement With FOX & Week 1 Of The College Football Season Is Saved first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
