WNBA Star Brittney Griner Appeared To Call Caitlin Clark A “Trash White Girl,” & I Can’t Stop Wondering Why The WNBA Won’t Embrace Their Star
If a sports league had an indisputable face and star that helped to generate millions of dollars in revenue, don’t you think the rest of the league would get behind that face? If a sports league had an indisputable face and star that helped to generate millions of dollars in revenue, don’t you think the rest of the league would get behind that face?
That’s the quite literal million dollar question with the WNBA and Caitlin Clark. The Indiana Fever guard who rocketed to stardom during her college days as an Iowa Hawkeye is clearly the face of the women’s professional league. Fans love watching the talented guard do her thing, but you know who seems to not enjoy it so much?
Much of the rest of the WNBA…
Now I understand that not everyone is going to love the best person in the league. Back in the 1990s, everyone across the NBA was trying to dethrone Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Being the best puts a target on your back, and understandably so. The only difference here is that interest in the WNBA was low before Clark joined the league, and now some of the Indiana Fever games have to be moved to different, larger venues to meet the demands of fans wanting to see Caitlin play.
Ryan Brewer, an associate professor of finance at Indiana University Columbus, found that of the $200 million in revenue that the WNBA brought in in 2024, Caitlin Clark was single handedly responsible for 26.5% of that revenue. In other words, Caitlin Clark’s success and story is helping cash the checks of others across the WNBA, and the other players could care less.
Brittney Griner even appeared to call her “trash,” among other racially-charged things recently. And I know the Atlanta Dream center can be a little divisive anyways with the whole “Biden traded her for the ‘Merchant of Death'” thing, but I’m not really trying to get into that. Instead, I’m just shining a light on what Griner appeared to say about Caitlin Clark as she became frustrated with her during one of their most recent matchups:
“Trash. F***ing white girl.”
Much of the social media world has run with that, and asked the question, “What if it was the other way around? And Clark was saying those things about Griner?” I suppose those are fine questions to ask, but we all know the answer… And I’ll even give the Atlanta Dream star the benefit of the doubt because that did happen in the heat of competition.
But I think the better question is: Why does the WNBA as a whole continue to hate on Caitlin Clark?
Like we touched on a bit ago, I’m sure there’s an element to her being one of the best players – if not the best player – in the league, and fellow competitors wishing to take her down. Though at the same time, if one single person has helped to put an entire sports league on the map, I feel as though there should be some respect and appreciation directed toward Caitlin Clark, no?
Sure, she might be dropping triple doubles on you, but Clark has brought a ton of eyeballs to the sport that people didn’t used to tune into all that much. In the 2024 season alone, the WNBA reported an almost 50% increase in viewership, and that didn’t just happen by chance… unless chance is Caitlin Clark’s middle name.
Maybe with time, the rest of the WNBA will better embrace Caitlin as a hero of the game as opposed to a villain. For now though, she’ll just have to continue to rain 3’s down on her adversaries and take over games. But it is tough to see other big stars of the game like Griner trying to drag her down, when in reality, the entirety of the WNBA should be happy to ride on the rocket ship known as the “Caitlin Clark Effect.”The post WNBA Star Brittney Griner Appeared To Call Caitlin Clark A “Trash White Girl,” & I Can’t Stop Wondering Why The WNBA Won’t Embrace Their Star first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
