Will Brandon Sklenar (A.K.A. Spencer Dutton) Return In ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff ‘1944’? The Actor Gives His Thoughts

Could Brandon Sklenar’s Spencer Dutton return in a future Yellowstone spinoff?

In case you are in need of a refresher, the last time we saw Sklenar’s Spencer Dutton was in the Season 2 finale of 1923. There might not be a character in the Yellowstone universe that had to withstand more trials and tribulations than Spencer Dutton, which in my mind, makes the perfect case for him to return in the upcoming 1944 spinoff.

If you are guessing that 1944 will be a spinoff that further explores the history of the Dutton family, you’d be correct. We got the origin story of Duttons and their beginning with the beautifully crafted 1883. Then fans were taken through the early 20s with the Dutton family in 1923. If you watched (and I’m assuming you did if you are reading this), then you know that the story, which also starred Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren (as Jacob and Cara Dutton, respectively), was primarily through the lens of struggle.

But Spencer Dutton did come out of the series finale alive and intact.

Taylor Sheridan has plenty of spinoffs in the works, and the next “period piece” in the Yellowstone universe will be 1944. The series is set to air later in 2026, and based on the timeline of the show, 1944 should chronicle the story of John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) father, John Dutton II, and his journey to carry forward the Dutton empire amid the trying times of World War II.

Though Spencer Dutton wouldn’t be the focus of the series by any means, there’s always the chance that he could be included. Brandon Sklenar’s character would be a couple of decades older in the show, but he’d still be around. And according to what the actor said when he was asked about a potential return while on Today, he’d very much be interested in coming back and continuing his story:

“It would be great. It would be pretty cool to see me with extra crows feet and frosted tips. Age me up a little bit.”

That’s not the first time that Sklenar has given an answer like that when asked if he’ll be involved with 1944.

When he spoke with Variety, the man behind Spencer Dutton said that his role in the Taylor Sheridan hit show has had a lasting impact on him, and that he’d quickly jump on the opportunity to get back into the storytelling of the Yellowstone universe:

“It has affected who I am, it has changed who I am. So I would love to continue to do it in any capacity if I could.”

And I know for a fact that fans of 1923 and the Yellowstone universe would love to see Brandon Sklenar reprise his role and continue Spencer Dutton’s story. Seems like a pretty easy casting decision, does it not?

If the reunion doesn’t work out, fans can find comfort in knowing that Sklenar and Taylor Sheridan will be joining forces again in 2027. The former Yellowstone spinoff star is set to pair with Sheridan to create a story outside of the Dutton family saga. It was announced earlier this year by the Hollywood Reporter that the 1923 star is set to lead in an action thriller called F.A.S.T., which was written by Taylor Sheridan.The post Will Brandon Sklenar (A.K.A.
