Nothing hits like that Texas swing.
Jake Worthington is riding a high since the release of his sophomore record, When I Write The Song. The La Porte, Texas native, is turning back the clock, creating country music that embraces and cherishes the traditional stylings of the genre. He showcased that flawlessly on his 2023 self-titled debut record, which he had been perfecting for the past five years and some change before the release.
That streak continued with When I Write The Song, showcasing Worthington’s prolific songwriting and vocals. He’s the real deal, and his sophomore record solidified that with features like Miranda Lambert, Mae Estes, and Marty Stuart.
While the record is filled with some twangy heartbreakers like “I Only Drinks When It Rains” and “Get Gone,” there are also some upbeat ditties that showcase his versatile sound. One of my favorite songs off the record, “My Home’s In Oklahoma,” was released as a single before the project was shared in full, and it’s still one I often reach for from the tracklist.
The traditional Western swing style tune highlights the true tale of Worthington, who gave us his Texas pride, moving from the Lone Star State across the Red River to Oklahoma.
Texans have a sense of pride for their home that is often not found in other states, and many Texans never leave the state. However, Worthington is an odd man out, having moved to its neighboring state, now calling about 2 hours north of Dallas home. While he’s still in close proximity to Texas, the tune highlights how love can make you do crazy things, like moving your home to Oklahoma.
“So I put Texas in my review mirror
‘Cause she lived ‘cross some old red river
Out on the plains where the buffalo grazed
And that’s where I’m gonna stay
Now my home’s in Oklahoma
Leave I’m never gonna
She’s all I’ve ever wanted
And my home’s in Oklahoma”
The moan of the steel guitar and the fiddle in the tune make the melody country to the core, and it feels as though you’ve stepped back in time into a traditional dance hall.
The studio recording is fantastic, but the song just got better with a recent studio session that Worthington released. The one-take studio session showcases how tight Worthington is with any players he’s put in a room with.
After introducing the players in the room, he shared a bit about what “My Home’s In Oklahoma” is about, then counted them off to dive right into the tune. Worthington’s silky, deep vocals coat your ears, and you’re instantly drawn in. His southern drawl perfectly complements the lyrics and the traditional sound of the tune.
This studio session highlights how consistent Worthington is as a musician. This man is the real deal.
