Paul Oakenfold is poised to become the first DJ to perform live in the Galápagos Islands, where he’s been confirmed to deliver a historic set for “Space2Sea Galápagos: Voyage of Discovery,” an ultra-exclusive science expedition.
With suites averaging $50,000 and limited to just 100 guests, the seven-day voyage aboard Silversea’s Silver Origin brings together a formidable roster of luminaries. Those include Neil deGrasse Tyson, the influential astrophysicist, author and host of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey; and former NASA astronaut and US Navy officer Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan, who holds the unique distinction of being both the first American woman to walk in space and the first woman to reach the Mariana Trench, the ocean’s deepest point.
Produced by FUTURE of SPACE, “Space2Sea Galápagos: Voyage of Discovery” is scheduled for November 1-8. The concept builds on the organization’s 10-day voyage last year to Antarctica, which featured deGrasse Tyson alongside iconic Star Trek actor William Shatner.
The Silver Origin was specifically chosen for its minimal environmental impact, protecting the fragile Galápagos ecosystem by utilizing dynamic positioning technology that eliminates the need for anchors.
Organizers are calling Oakenfold’s installation “the world’s most remote dancefloor.” The pioneering trance music producer will “stage exclusive performances under Galápagos skies,” astonishingly DJing in the same region where Charles Darwin developed the theory of natural selection.
During Darwin’s 1835 visit to the Galápagos Islands, the legendary biologist observed unique variations among species such as finches with differently shaped beaks, which helped him form theories that later became central to his groundbreaking explanation of evolution.
“This seven-day voyage is designed to connect the cosmic perspective of space exploration with the evolutionary wonders of Darwin’s living laboratory, offering a new kind of transformational journey at the intersection of science and human experience,” according to a press release shared with EDM.com.
Other confirmed attendees include evolutionary biologist Dr. Beth Shapiro, the Chief Science Officer at Colossal Biosciences and a recipient of the MacArthur “Genius” Grant; Bradley G. Munkowitz, a design director on Tron: Legacy who helped shape the film’s iconic visual identity; and Chai Vasarhelyi, the Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker behind Free Solo.
