The day has finally come. One of Tyler Childers‘ most beloved unreleased songs has been released from the vault.
Leading up to the confirmation that he would release the song last week, fans were speculating based on some hints in the album teasers that it’s likely on the tracklist for his forthcoming album, Snipe Hunter. In the record’s trailer, which is set in a barber shop, the barber calls over a woman by the name of Oneida.
Many fans felt like this would be the lead single off his forthcoming record; however, Timmy Ty threw us a curveball and released “Nose On The Grindstone” instead. But hey, another gem from the vault… I’ll take it.
“Oneida” has been a fan favorite for nearly a decade, with Childers first debuting during his return to Red Barn Radio in 2016. Childers performed many gems that he’s never formally released on these Red Barn Radio appearances. During this appearance in particular, he decided to showcase a song that he’d been letting “collect dust” for some time. “Oneida” is a very unique take on loving an older woman, and while the tune has comical undertones, Childers poetically talks about falling in love with an older woman, picking up on mannerisms that indicate her age over physical traits.
“Back before birthdays were something she dreads
Back before children had settled her friends
Back when the radio spoke to her heart
Oh, girls they wanna have fun
I lay here awake and I laugh at her jokes
She is referencing movies I’m too young to know
And I’m letting her lead as we dance in the dark
Oh girl, I’m falling in love”
In the final verses of the tune, Childers pleads with the woman to stay, letting her know that he will step up to the plate to be what she needs and that he’s ready to settle down, despite his young age.
The melodic crescendo of the studio recording complements the build-up of the love story flawlessly. But I expect nothing less, given that Tyler Childers is working with the musical legend Rick Rubin. Rubin has worked with about every legend you can think of, including the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Johnny Cash and Red Hot Chili Peppers, to name a few. He’s known for pushing artists outside of their comfort zone, and although he does not know how to play a single instrument, or much about music theory, he’s a certified “vibe” master and studio guru. I’m sure you’re reading that and laughing, but it’s no joke. He has the ability to help artists channel their inner creativity, stripping away all distractions and noise, and the process is almost a spiritual experience.
In conjunction with the release of “Oneida,” Tyler has gifted fans the full tracklist, and perhaps to our surprise… it’s not full of old songs from the vault. Rather, “Oneida” and “Grindstone” are the only two old songs, and the rest are brand spankin’ new.
