There is no better way to start your week than by hearing a Tyler Childers monologue. But for those at Healing Appalachia, they had the privilege of hearing this gem before the general public during his headlining slot on Saturday night.
Tyler Childers‘ “Bitin’ List” from his most recent studio project, Snipe Hunter, has become a fan favorite from the tracklist. The hater anthem is the perfect song to scream at the top of your lungs when someone p***es you off, and it features one of the best lines in country music in the chorus:
“And if there ever come a time I got rabies
You’re high on my bitin’ list”After the tune began to gain some traction online, behind-the-scenes footage went viral showing Childers in the studio barking into the microphone like a ferocious dog, which made fans fall more in love with the tune. It’s plain hilarious. Of course, he has to get into the character to sell the lyrics of “Bitin’ List,” but seeing how it all went down in the studio is top-tier content.

Over the weekend at Healing Appalachia, the tune naturally found its way into Childers’ setlist, along with many other tracks off Snipe Hunter. But, given the aggressive nature of “Bitin’ List,” it lent itself as the perfect tune for Childers to speak on before performing it for the Kentucky crowd.
If you’re an avid Tyler Childers fan, then you know that the monologues he delivers during his setlists are iconic. The tangents he’s gone on range from making fun of fans who are bitter that he no longer plays tunes like “Feathered Indians” at his shows, to raving about the potato wedges at an aquarium, to the more TMI topics, such as his loose stool leading him to reschedule a show.
You never know what you’re going to get during a Tyler Childers monologue, and that’s the beauty of them.
During Healing Appalachia, Childers spoke quite a few times to the crowd ahead of performing a song, like dedicating “All Your’n” to the never-ending road work in West Virginia, but one of the longest talks he had with the crowd was before “Bitin’ List.”
Instead of encouraging people to feed into the rage they feel toward a particular person, holding onto that anger, he urged fans to belt out the song with every ounce of their chest to let that hatred go. Childers admitted that he wrote this song as a way to let go of this feeling, and it worked for him, so he hopes that others sing this song with that same intention.
“This one right here is for those people that you just can’t stand. But more importantly, this is for you. Because I am sure that when I said that, there is at least one person that came to your mind. And you were like. ‘I know that person. I know exactly who that is!’
And I’ll tell you exactly who it is, because nobody wants to know. Nobody needs that, come on now! And you know what, furthermore, you don’t need that.
You know why? I’ll tell you why because hate is a thing that can poison your veins and your eyes when you’re sweaty on stage, shifting around for a clock on the wall to tell you that it’s just about over. See, the thing about hate is, it’s a bad chemical that you are carrying within you. And I know the person that you were harboring it towards, they don’t even know! They don’t even care. It bothers them not nearly a bit!
But it is bothering you and killing you slowly! And you got to get that sh** out of there. So, I wrote this song, and it made me feel better. And I hope it does the same exact thing to you.
Now, if you ain’t heard it, there’s a chorus and it kind of repeats itself and you can hop in there whenever you can. And if you can’t, there’s gonna be a part at the end where you can expel all that ugliness that you’ve just been holding onto, and get it out of there. We’re gonna shoot it straight up in the sky, and it’s going to fall in the sludge of the Big Sandy River.”
Tyler Childers and the Food Stamps lead into the anthemic start of “Bitin’ List,” and it took no time for the audience to jump in, shooting that hatred straight up into the sky.
