He may not have trouble reading a defense, but reading a script was a different story.
Travis Kelce has been dabbling in a lot of new ventures as his NFL career gets closer to the end. The star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs obviously has his popular New Heights podcast with his brother, retired Philadelphia Eagles tight end Jason Kelce, reportedly signing a $125 million deal last year with Amazon’s Wondery network. And he’s also been trying his hand at some acting, appearing as a waiter in the upcoming Adam Sandler sequel Happy Gilmore 2.
Of course all this has come as he’s become one of the most famous dudes in the world thanks to his relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift. There’s no doubt that dating one of the most famous women in the world has gotten him a lot more offers for other projects. But even before Kelce and Swift went public with their relationship, not long after the Chiefs won the Super Bowl back in 2023, Travis made his SNL hosting debut on March 4 of that same year.
During his monologue, Kelce joked about winning the Super Bowl against his brother Jason, his viral sideline moments, and his old reality TV dating show Catching Kelce (which he admitted was “embarrassing”). And he appeared in a few sketches, including one pretty funny one where he played the “straight male friend.”
But during a recent appearance on the Bussin’ With the Boys podcast, Travis opened up on his SNL appearance and admitted that it was tough because he struggles with reading:
“The writers rooms were fun because you’re just getting pitched ideas. The table reading, for a guy that can’t really read that well, it was kind of a f—ed situation, and I felt like I was just trying to get through the reading instead of actually acting it out and giving it a voice and giving it a character and things like that. I was just focused on just, ‘Don’t f—ing skip this line.'”
Kelce also revealed that he was more of an audio book guy, adding that the table read was the hardest part of his time on the show.
Of course the admission sparked a lot of debate, with many poking fun at Kelce for admitting that he doesn’t read very well, while others defended him and claimed that he suffered from dyslexia (which may be true, but it doesn’t look like he’s ever revealed that if it’s really the case).
Regardless, Kelce is doing pretty well for himself. He’s building a media empire, he’s one of the biggest names in the NFL, and he’s dating the biggest pop star in the world.
Who needs to read when you’ve got all that going for you?
