Teams like Nottingham Forest, who were docked points last season for breaching FFP rules, Brighton and Newcastle, who have had to limit spending for fear of sanctions, would stand to benefit if Chelsea were stripped points. The Premier League launched an investigation into the club’s past financial records after current owners Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly voluntarily reported suspect transactions made between 2012 and 2019. It is understood the signings of Brazilian star Willian, former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o and Eden Hazard are part of the probe. Chelsea self-declared and are cooperating with the Premier League on the situation, as they did with UEFA which saw them pay £8million for a similar issue in 2023. One source told talkSPORT: “A lot of clubs feel that even though Chelsea have changed owners they should be subject to the same process as everyone else.” A separate source added that the option of reaching a settlement means a swifter resolution and reduces the cost of legal fees. Chelsea and the Premier League declined to comment but the general feeling at Stamford Bridge is that clubs have been supportive due to the fact they were the ones who brought the payments to light.
