Tracy Lawrence’s Music Is Connecting With Young Fans Thanks To TikTok: “They Know The Deep Catalogue”

Tracy Lawrence doesn’t mind that his old music is finding new life on TikTok.

The 90s country legend sat down with us on the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast to discuss his own venture into podcasting, why the 90s era of music is as popular as ever, how 90s country compares to classic rock, his passion for giving back to the less fortunate, and much more.

One of the more interesting parts of the conversation we shared with Lawrence was how his some of his songs are going viral on TikTok. It’s no secret that TikTok – for better or worse – has become a critical driver in the music industry. Either new artists are discovered through the app, or old artists are rediscovered by the younger generation.

And with country music starting to trend back towards the 90s sound, as Lawrence explained below, more young people are starting to seek out that style:

“I feel like we’re starting to swing back into a lot of that more traditional stuff too with kind of the rock and honky tonk edge back to it. Guys like Zach Top and some of the other young artists coming back in and moving away from what the pop stuff was. I like the ol’ honky tonk stuff myself.”

The younger generation evidently does as well.

We asked Tracy if he was surprised that his song “Find Out Who Your Friends Are” was getting a second life on TikTok, and he responded by saying that if there was one song of his that was timeless, that tune spanning across decades makes the most sense:

“That’s such a big, universal song because everybody’s got these ride or die buddies and everything. And ‘Find Out Who Your Friends Are’ has kind of got that vibe to it. I think it connects.

It’s not something that breaks down generations. I think it’s something that everyone can relate to and we all have those friends in our lives. It doesn’t surprise me about that one.”

Another one of his songs that’s become very popular with kids that were born after the year 2000, thanks to TikTok, is “Time Marches On.” That track is obviously considered his most famous, and the social media app is helping take the song to new heights.

See? TikTok isn’t so bad (when it comes to some things).

Because of the rediscovery of his music, younger fans are not only showing up to his concerts…. they know each and every word to his hits. And as Tracy Lawrence continues to play live, he’s appreciating the support of the younger demographic:

“I’ve been very blessed. I’ve had such a great body of work and it’s been quite the journey… I would imagine that if somebody stumbles across one of my songs or it comes to their mind, they kind of go back and dig through a lot of the old records.

I have people requesting things that are B-sides, so I’m going back and I’m in the process right now of working up some B-sides from some of those old albums from the ’90s to kind of re-engage those fans.

There’s some great stuff that never got singled. And it’s fascinating that you see a lot of these kids that have really gone through that entire body of work and they know the deep catalogue.”
