The Waventiced Ripped Through the Alt-80s Spectrum with Riff-Heavy Goth Rock Nostalgia in David
With their latest release, David, The Waventiced strayed far from the archetypal doom-draped aesthetics synonymous with the Sisters of Mercy yet channelled the same paralysing force through filthy vintage rock riffs and emotionally raw vocals that sink deeper than surface-level sonic seduction. It’s not often that post-punk finds this much teeth without sinking into outright nihilism, but The Waventiced managed it while still playing with a cheeky nod to Killing Moon-era Echo and the Bunnymen in the hook that slices clean through the murk. Once you think you’ve settled into the bloodied sonic groove, the single tears itself away from the riotous rhythms and shoves you into the cosmos via polyphonic synth lines and space-dusted phasers that feel less like an outro and more like an out-of-body trip into an alien simulation. Yet, there’s nothing disjointed about the way it all collides. It carries enough panache to keep any nihilist glued to their speakers.
