How did I not know this was occurring? Seriously, how?

The inaugural Wienie 500 race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway happened this afternoon and every single picture and video I’ve seen is giving me the biggest pangs of regret I’ve felt in quite a long time. Somehow, despite spending an inordinate amount of time online every day, I was unaware that all six Oscar Mayer wienermobiles were participating in an all-out race for supremacy.

Apparently this has happened in the past and this was just the first race in over a decade. Why do we do this here in America? Because freedom, that’s why. Any more questions? Didn’t think so.

The day kicked off, obviously with a singing of the national anthem. Well, not the national anthem of the United States as most races and sporting events do, but the national anthem of hot dogs and bologna everywhere.

Please rise and put your hand over your stomach:

I love this country so much.

What followed was 15 minutes of weinermobile magic. There were lead changes, a bit of weiner rubbing (pause), and a whole lot of hot dog puns as the commentators lived up to the moment and dropped every imaginable dad joke during the race.

Each of the six vehicles represented a type of regional hot dog from around the country: Midwest: Chi Dog, East: New York Dog, Southeast: Slaw Dog, South: Chili Dog, Northwest: Seattle Dog, and Southwest: Sonoran Dog.

Personally, I think it’s a bit strange to separate Southeast and the South, but hey, I won’t complain that the South got a little extra nod. Let’s be honest, they probably were the demographic most excited for this race…

At the end of the day, Slaw Dog made a mad dash for the finish line, beating Chi Dog by a bite after cutting to the inside and riding the momentum to take home the victory.

Let’s get another look at that photo finish…

I’m in love, there’s just no other way to say it. These glizzies were flying around that track at 60 miles per hour, which when you consider the toppling potential of those top heavy vehicles is not slow. The fans were rowdy and dressed for the occasion, not to mention this lovely old lady stole everyone’s hearts with a well worded sign:

Musventurenal MUSVENTURENAL IS ALL ABOUT MUSIC, ADVENTURE & ARSENAL ONLY.
