If you’re in America right now, chances are you’re not reading this post. You’re probably getting ready to go out and have fun with friends and family. Maybe have a few drinks, grill various meats, and enjoy an explosion or two — controlled or otherwise. All I’m asking is that you have fun, be safe, and crank that metal as loud as fuck. It’s your right.
Guapa
Fyr (Nuclear Blast)
They may be down a guitarist, but this doomy stoner rock outfit from Sweden opted to use that lineup change to make this EP a “big turning point” for the band. Spanning just four tracks, this offering is full of the type of riffs and thick bass grooves you’d expect from a band like Guapa. It’s trippy, heavy, and thanks to vocalist Emma Näslund’s delivery, it’s got an almost ethereal feel to the whole thing. Enjoy after a bong rip or two.

Visions Of Atlantis
Armada Live Over Europe (Napalm Records)
Pirate metal may have a reputation of being so cheesy it’s cheddar, but Visions Of Atlantis at least remembers that it’s not all about grog and partying like some other bands in their lane. Big and epic, this symphonic metal act turns other bands’ LazyTown antics and attempts to give it the gravitas of a Gore Verbinski directed feature film.

Warkings
Armageddon (Napalm Records)
Do you like power metal but prefer your bands to cosplay like warriors from the past? Do you prefer to revel in the genre’s cheese like a piece of cubed bread in fondue? This is your jam if you want your power metal to sound big and epic at all times.

Wytch Hazel
V: Lamentations (Bad Omen Records)
Just some good old British heavy metal to be had here, which is impressive because they’ve only been around since 2011. Give this one a listen if you miss the days of dueling guitars, bass with a sense of movement behind it, and heavy metal days of yore.
