Singing one for Charlie Kirk.
The faces of country music are honoring the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk loudly at their shows since his tragic murder last week. While hosting a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University, Charlie Kirk was shot in the neck and died shortly after.
The senseless act of violence is truly gut-wrenching, especially when Kirk’s mission was to foster conversation between those with differing opinions. He argued that as long as we’re still talking, still debating, still standing face to face with people who disagree with us, we won’t lose our sense of humanity:
“When people stop talking, that’s when you get violence. That’s when civil war happens. Because you start to think the other side is so evil, and they lose their humanity.”
Artists like Aaron Watson, Jamey Johnson, Gavin Adcock, Justin Moore, and more have spoken about the horrific incident at their shows, dedicating songs to him and his family or sharing their honest thoughts on the matter as they feel a heaviness in their hearts.
Cody Johnson, who is known for taking his fans to church during his concerts, shared at a recent Nebraska show that this was his last straw, and he’s “sick and tired of division.”
“And I want to tell you right now, I’m sick… You know, after the things that have happened this week. I’m not even going to go into it because that’s not why you came here. But I’m sick and tired of division. I’m sick and tired of living where people think it’s okay to hate somebody so much over something that they have to do something stupid.”
Johnson later unified the fans at this concert by leading a group sing-along to “God Bless America,” which was a beautiful scene.

The outpourings are showing no sign of slowing down, and the most recent country stars adding to this list are the ’90s legends Shenandoah.
“We’re going to do this song for Charlie Kirk’s family.”
Similar to Jamey Johnson, frontman Marty Raybon only shared a few words before diving into the song, dedicating the song to the late Charlie Kirk and his wife and kids, but he let the words of the tune do the talking. Raybon laid down a stunning cover of Squire Parsons’ “Beulah Land” at a recent show, and it took the crowd to church.
Marty Raybon released a cover of the traditional hymn on his 2012 solo project Southern Roots and Branches (Yesterday and Today). The beautiful acoustic tune not only showcases his showstopping voice, but the lyrics pack a punch. The song draws from Isaiah 62:4, which speaks of God’s people no longer being forsaken but instead being led to Beulah—the sacred land symbolizing the covenant and union between the Lord and His people.
“I’m kind of homesick for a country
To where I’ve never been before
No sad goodbyes will there be spoken
For time won’t matter anymore
Beulah Land, I’m longing for you
And some day on thee I’ll stand
And there my home shall be eternal
Beulah Land, Sweet Beulah Land…”
This was truly a beautiful performance, and it’s incredible to see so many artists lean into their songs of faith as they process their emotions surrounding the events of our nation. Hearing the audience sing along with him leaves you with chills.
They don’t make them like Shenandoah and Marty Raybon anymore…
