The Ryder Cup just started and there’s already a clear winner… the advertisers.
As the bi-annual, team match play tournament got started between Team U.S.A. and Team Europe earlier today, golf fans were excited to soak up every single shot of the competition that’s taking place at Bethpage Black in New York. The only problem? NBC and it’s affiliate channel, USA, have been shoving commercials down the throats of viewers, which has even caused some shots out on the golf course to not be aired altogether.
With it being the Ryder Cup, and there only being a limited amount of golfers out on the course at any given time, fans tuning in were furious that the advertising was seemingly taking priority over the actual tournament itself. That led to many taking to social media to express their outrage on how NBC and USA have handled the coverage thus far.
Pretty ironic that people are hating on a channel called USA as they cheer for Team U.S.A., am I right?
Though there’s not a total time breakdown of golf shown versus commercials just yet, I’ve been tuned into the Ryder Cup since it started early this morning, and I can explain it like this. They show a little golf, go to commercial, get behind on what’s happening on the golf course, show a couple shots that viewers missed, and just when they seem to get caught back up on the action… THEY GO BACK TO COMMERCIAL.
Golf broadcasts also do a thing called “Playing Through,” where they minimize the broadcast of the golf and allow for a picture-in-picture advertisement to take over for a couple of minutes. So far, it feels as though this is the order of importance for NBC and USA:
1. Show commercials
2. Utilize the “Playing Through” commercials
3. Show the Ryder Cup
And granted, that could be a bit of an exaggeration, or even me taking my frustration out because Team U.S.A. is down early on American soil (that doesn’t happen very often for the home team). But at least I know I’m not alone, because plenty of fans and golfers themselves have taken to X/Twitter to voice their displeasure with the overload of advertisements so far in the 2025 Ryder Cup Coverage:
This @USANetwork coverage driving me insane already. Think we are on the 5th commercial break. May have to flip on the @SkySports version. Any better?

There’s a golf tournament? I just turned on the @USANetwork to buffer and watch commercials this morning but what a nice surprise!

If I ever win the powerball I’m buying all the commercial spots for the Ryder cup and showing live golf. That will be my give back to society.

Sir, I’m simply begging you to win the Powerball within the next couple of hours… and for Team U.S.A. to rally. The post Ryder Cup Fans Outraged With How Many Commercials Are Being Included Within The Broadcast first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
