When it comes to songwriters, they don’t get too much better than Rhett Miller and Evan Felker.
In case you are not familiar, Miller is the longtime frontman of Old 97’s, an alt-country powerhouse that formed in Dallas, TX in 1992 and has managed to stay relevant and inspire generations of artists for well over 30 years. Miller is the type of musician that is likely one of your favorite artist’s favorite artists, especially if they were coming up in Texas or Oklahoma back in the ’90s and early 2000s.
Evan Felker is one of those artists who holds Miller and his ability as a songwriter in exceptionally high regard. Best known as the frontman and chief songwriter for Turnpike Troubadours, Felker has proven himself as one of the best lyricists in the game right now. He’s on the shortlist of the best ever, if you ask me, and he still draws inspiration and seeks feedback from Miller when working on his craft.
With that said, it makes perfect sense that these two songwriters have long been collaborators, and Miller’s fingerprints are all over Turnpike’s catalog. Perhaps most notably, Turnpike included a cover of “Doreen” on their self-titled Turnpike Troubadours record, putting a bluegrass spin on a song Miller wrote and performed with the Old 97’s nearly two decades prior. Moreover, Felker and Miller co-wrote “A Little Song” together on the same album in 2015.
The next year, in 2016, Turnpike released a deep cut single that never made it on an album of their own, and has been criminally underrated for nearly a decade now. Titled “Come As You Are,” the single was another co-write with Miller, who now has decided to take his cut at recording it.
Released this past week as the lead single off of his forthcoming solo record A lifetime of Riding by Night, Miller teamed up with Felker once more for a duet on a beautiful tune that never quite got its due. Check out Miller’s version of “Come As You Are” featuring Evan Felker here:
“Well how did I get to the shape that I’m in?
A younger man’s thoughts, some tonic, some gin
And now I’m fumblin’ around for it, darlin’ don’t go
The click of the heel to the tap of the toe”
Man, this one never get’s old.
And for reference, here is the Turnpike Troubadours version, which was released as a single in 2019 in tandem with Bruce Robison on his The Next Waltz project.
Miller’s aforementioned solo record is set for release on October 10, and it is sure to be a masterpiece of songwriting, just like the rest of his catalog. Based on the track list, it even appears that he decided to cut “A Little Song,” the other Evan Felker co-write that was originally recorded by Turnpike Troubadours.
Here is the full 13 tune track list for reference.
