What is wrong with people?
Jason Boland & The Stragglers are the true definition of “road dogs.” Since releasing their first album in 1999, Boland and his band have become legends in the red dirt country music scene thanks not only to a consistent string of incredible albums, but also due to their non-stop touring schedule that takes them far beyond the band’s roots in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
But recently, the band woke up on the bus to a startling discovery: A bullet hole.
According to 107.7 The Red Dirt Rebel, the bullet hole was discovered on the morning of August 2, just inches away from where sound engineer Chris Mekolik was sleeping on the bus.
Mekolik says nobody heard anything at the time, which isn’t really surprising considering the bus was rolling down the road and it sounds like everybody was asleep at the time. According to the band’s schedule, they performed at the Diamond Ballroom in Oklahoma City on August 1, and then headed to Hochatown Saloon in Broken Bow for a show the next day.
Luckily the bullet was stopped when it lodged into an electrical box, but it hasn’t been able to be retrieved because it would require almost totally dismantling the bathroom area of the bus.
Of course it’s going to be difficult if not impossible to determine who shot at the bus at this point, given the fact that the bullet can’t be easily recovered and it’s not even known where the shooting occurred. The bullet appears to have been from a .45 mm, and it’s assumed it was the result of some sort of road rage as the band was traveling between gigs, but without a suspect I guess we’ll never really know.
What we do know, though, is that it’s lucky that Mekolik, nor anybody else, was injured or worse in such a stupid act of violence.
