Randy Houser Says “Back In The Bottle” Was Written After One Too Many Late Nights With Post Malone: “My Old A** Was Hurting”

Hurting, but can’t say no to a good time.
Randy Houser is sharing a drinking song that is hitting close to home for all of us with his latest single, “Back In The Bottle.” The drinking anthem embodies the feeling of wanting to go back out again, if you could put the hangover back in the bottle before doing it all over again. It’s beyond relatable to those who enjoy a good time but hate the repercussions of their own actions.
“But if I could put last night back in the bottle
Hell, I wouldn’t be in half the shape I’m in
Yeah, if I could put last night back in the bottle, Lord
I’d pull last night back down and drink it again”
And Houser was inspired to pen the catchy twanger after living through a bender where he wished he could put his hurting “Back In The Bottle.” At the time of the release, Houser noted a bender inspired the tune with none other than one of the biggest partiers in the genre today, Post Malone.
“When I had the idea for ‘Back In The Bottle,’ not to name drop, but I was hanging out with Post Malone, and we went to the studio. Didn’t even leave to get started ‘til probably midnight. We did two nights like that, and we were having a great time, writing and drinking.”
As Houser recalls, the back-to-back nights were so much fun that it prompted him to come up with the hook of the song.
“So that gave me the idea: ‘If I could put last night back in the bottle, I’d pull last night back down and drink it again,’ And we’ve all had those nights. How many times have we hair-of-the-dogged it? Sometimes you just gotta keep rocking and keep having fun.”
Houser expanded on this story about his bender with Malone during a recent appearance at Nashville’s Listening Room Cafe. Houser said that because Malone likes to begin writing so late at night (around 11 PM, to be exact), they end up drinking and writing into the wee hours of the morning. After a couple of nights of this, Houser shared that he was hurting so bad, but kept saying yes to the writing sessions, hoping that they’d get a song Malone would want to cut.
“That sh**’s tough on me. So we were sitting at Losers, the back of Losers, a couple of nights. We’d go write, start about midnight, drink ’til the am, go write, drink ’til the am. And about three nights of this, I was like, ‘Sh** man, I don’t know. I don’t even know if it’s worth a cut anymore. My old a** was hurting. But I went anyway.
But about night three, I had this song idea. Just because it was hurting too bad, and I still said yes. And I took this song idea, and nobody bid on it, so I ended up just finishing it myself. I just put this song out a few weeks ago, and I’m going to try it tonight. It’s called ‘Back In The Bottle,’ and it goes like this.”
After sharing this story, Houser went on to lay down a stunning acoustic version of the tune.

While I am sure that Houser was not thanking Post Malone after this bender for leaving him down bad, we fans need to thank Post Malone for delivering a good enough time that Houser kept going back night after night. Without that, we wouldn’t have this heater to enjoy.
