George Strait out here making dreams come true… in more way than one.
Last month, George Strait took his talents to the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for a pair of shows in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. And in both cities, the King took time during the show to give away a free home to Purple Heart recipients. Of course, the illustrious Purple Heart is awarded to any member of the United State military who is wounded or killed in action, and it actually dates back to the very founding of our country. Originally, the Purple Heart was called the “Badge of Military Merit,” and was established by George Washington, who was the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, in 1782. The Badge of Military Merit was awarded by Washington himself, and only given to 3 Revolutionary War heroes.
A United States Army veteran himself, George Strait has made a habit of donating homes to wounded combat veterans and Gold Star families over the past 14 years, partnering with Military Warriors Support Foundation to donate over 120 homes in 32 different states. He will frequently pause the show to recognize and honor these heroes, who are brought on stage to meet with George and be presented with a mortgage-free home. Naturally, a spirited “USA, USA, USA” chant from the stadium-size crowd is a common occurrence.
George Strait is generally regarded as one of country music’s most charitable acts, but I don’t think people realize just how much he gives, and just how little he seeks praise for it. Just humbly changing lives wherever he goes… a true legend of the game.
Last month in Philadelphia, George invited Retired General Leroy Sisco on stage to present a ceremonial key to Retired U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Tyler Welty, a Purple Heart recipient. The key was to a brand new, mortgage-free, Georgia home for the retired Sergeant, who will be sharing it with his new wife, Reanna. How do I know that? Because he proposed right there on the stage.
Retired General Leroy Sisco introduced Tyler to the crowd, detailing his incredible acts of bravery:
“I want you to meet Purple Heart recipient, Sergeant First Class Tyler Vaughn Welty… Sergeant First Class was deployed and was injured severely with an 82mm hitting his vehicle, being wounded so severely. Today, he suffers from TBI, PTSD, anxiety and severe depression… please give him an incredible hand. We’re gonna say ‘thank you’ in a very special way, and we’re gonna give this incredible hero a beautiful home.”
After the presentation of the key, Tyler surprised his girlfriend Reanna and got down on one knee… right there on the stage.
Gotta love it.
You can also watch the moment the Welty family received their home from Georgia Governor Brian Kemp… just an incredible moment for this veteran and his family.
A few years back, George shared a video message encouraging fans to donate to Military Warriors Support Foundation, and gave some insight into why he’s so passionate about helping these military heroes and their families:
