Putting the rumors to rest.
This week, Priscilla Presley sat down for an interview with People, where she addressed the long-standing rumors that her late ex-husband, Elvis Presley, is still alive. For many years, conspiracies have been flying around the internet that Elvis might have faked his own death in order to escape the spotlight and music career.
He was in poor heath when he passed at age 42 in 1977, but Priscilla says that she wishes he “was still alive,” assuring the public that there’s no truth to the wild conspiracies.
“There’s been so much that’s untruthful out there — things like Elvis is still alive and hidden somewhere. I wish he was still alive.”
They two got married in 1967, after first meeting in 1959 at a party in Germany. Elvis was 24-year-old and was stationed in the U.S. Army, and Priscilla was 14-years-old and the step-daughter of an Air Force Captain. She eventually moved into Graceland in 1962 to be closer to Elvis, and the rest, as they say, is history.
She recalled meeting him at such a young age and how magical it was at that time:
“I met him at such a young age I didn’t have time to think about life yet. Even when dating him, I’d think, ‘What am I going to do? I don’t want to be a nurse. I don’t want to be a teacher. I don’t want to be a secretary. What can do?’ Other things happened, and I love every moment.”
In her new memoir Softly, as I Leave You: Life After Elvis, she writes about her daughter Lisa Marie:
“I wanted to keep the family together as much as I could. One way or another, I made sure she saw her daddy.”
She also addressed some of the films that have been made about her and her relationship with Elvis which depict it as pretty volatile at times, though Priscilla says it wasn’t exactly like that, admitting that Elvis did have a temper but it wasn’t how it was portrayed in the movies:
“I mean, I can’t even remember Elvis and I having a feud. He did have a temper, there’s no doubt. In the movie Priscilla, it has a moment where Elvis is on the telephone talking to Colonel Parker.
The real story is Colonel was really upsetting him, and I had just come in, he didn’t know I was there.”
She explained:
“He just lifted up [the chair], and he just threw it. By the time it got out of his hands he’s like, ‘Oh my God,’ and he came running over to me. That’s how it really was. Elvis did have a temper, but he never hurt anyone.”
Priscilla has lived an incredibly interesting life, and I’m sure her book will be an incredibly interesting and intimate look at the life she had with Elvis as well as her late daughter, Lisa Marie, who passed away in 2023.
