Police Report Details Brent Hinds Crash; Celebration of Life to Be Held in Atlanta

It was only a few days ago that we lost Brent Hinds. The former Mastodon guitarist was tragically taken from this world on August 20, when he was involved in a car crash while riding his Harley Davidson. While we’ve had some idea of what happened, a new police report with 911 calls of the incident sheds even more of a sad light on the situation.

Hinds was hit by an SUV that failed to yield while turning at the intersection of Memorial Drive SE and Boulevard SE, which is near downtown Atlanta. Officers found him unresponsive and he was pronounced dead my responding medics.

The Atlanta Police Department released the report online, which said that the driver of the SUV, who was “positive the light was green” when she turned, remained at the scene until police arrived. A witness at the scene refuted this claim though, saying that while Hinds was “driving fast” at the the time, the driver ran through the light while it was red.

A 911 caller at the scene described the horror—Hinds went “up in the air” during impact, spinning “a couple of times. And then he fell. It looks like his left leg buckled over his right leg. I was two cars back, so I didn’t get to see the full impact, but I heard the impact and [saw Hinds] spinning.”

The responding police officer said: “At the moment I arrived on scene [Hinds] was breathing and moving with visible injuries to his head, arms and torso. He was transported … to Grady [Memorial Hospital] where he perished from his injuries.”

The official obituary for Hinds says that a celebration of life is to take place in Atlanta, though no other details were given.
