Stepping up in the wake of complete tragedy in his personal life.
I’m sure we’ve all seen the devastating news about how South-central Texas was ravaged by flash flooding over the 4th of July weekend, and over 130 people have already been confirmed deceased. Camp Mystic – a Christian girls camp located in Texas Hill Country – is currently grieving the unfathomable loss of 27 young campers and counselors.
And the tragedy continues to unfold. While dozens of people are still unaccounted for, and we won’t know the official toll and extent of the damage for weeks (if not months), what we do know is that the South-central Texas area currently needs all the help it can get to recover and pick up the pieces.
Music is of course healing, and in times of distress, the people who make the music are the ones who often step up. When Hurricane Helene caused similarly tragic flooding in Western North Carolina last fall, Eric Church and Luke Combs put together the Concert for Carolina benefit, which raised over $24 million for disaster relief. And now with the devastating flooding in Texas, other artists with connections to Texas are putting together benefit concerts to help heal the Lone Star state.
Country music artist Josh Weathers put together a benefit concert – and raised over $400,000 – less than 48 hours after the disaster happened, which was impressive all around. Then George Strait announced that a “Strait To The Heart” benefit concert was being organized and would take place later this month on July 27. Miranda Lambert has also made it public that she has a Texas benefit concert in the works.
The Josh Abbott Band announced their “Deep in the Heart Benefit Concert” earlier today, which will feature Carly Pearce, Casey Donahew, Kaitlin Butts, The Panhandlers, and Wade Bowen.
And another benefit was announced this afternoon, which is being hosted by Texas artist Pat Green officially dubbed Pat Green and Friends: Texas Flood Relief Livestream. The singer-songwriter will live-stream a special, non-ticketed benefit from Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, this Wednesday, July 16th at 6:30 pm CST. There will be no audience be in attendance, though it will be streamed for free on YouTube with plenty of very talented artists set to perform.
Working in partnership with the Texas Rangers and REV Entertainment, Miranda Lambert, Jon Pardi, Dierks Bentley, Corey Kent, Casey Donahew, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Josh Abbott, Ryan Bingham, Eli Young Band, Flatland Cavalry, Joe Nichols, Kaitlin Butts, Ty Myers, Kevin Fowler, Aaron Watson, Jon Wolfe and Bob Schneider will take part, as well as additional artists still to be announced.
All proceeds from the concert and livestream will be distributed to Kerr County Relief, TEXSAR and the Do It For Durrett Foundation via The Pat Green Foundation, directly benefiting the families affected by this heart-wrenching disaster.
It’s all extremely personal for Green, not only because he’s a Texas native, but also because he very tragically lost his younger brother John, John’s wife Julia and their two young sons due to the historic flooding of the Guadalupe River in Central Texas.
It’s beyond impressive that he’s been able to put this together considering the heartbreaking circumstances around is family, but it’s admirable that he’s stepping up despite it and will surely do a ton of good for other who were impacted so tragically.
