Oliver Anthony is fixing to bring some tunes to a live audience.
The “Rich Men North Of Richmond” singer is headed down to the Lone Star State next weekend to perform his first live show since the release of his phenomenal new single, “Scornful Woman.” The gut-wrenching new single paints a picture of a divorced man, going through hell as his soon to be ex-wife tries to shamelessly take him to the cleaners.
Of course, divorce is relatively common in America, and many men might identify with the message, but the song gets much more personal in the last verse, as Oliver Anthony belts out:
She can have all the money
And they can keep all the fame
I’d go back to being broke as a joke
If I could just get a break from the pain
And according to Joe Rogan, it’s 100% accurate, but I suppose I wouldn’t expect anything less from Oliver Anthony.
In a recent podcast, Rogan confessed that Anthony had confided in him when he first started to blow up, and that they’ve kept in touch. Joe said that Oliver previewed the new album for him and told him the backstory of the song.
Here’s how he described it, and he didn’t spare any details:
“He starts making millions of dollars, playing arenas. The wife divorces him. She wants everything. She wants EVERYTHING. She wants more than half. She wants all the money he’s going to be making in the future because she was with him when he was broke. It’s f***** crazy. He’s just tortured. He wants to die. Wants to die… and writes this song.”
Damn… a scornful woman, indeed.
The song has quickly shot up the charts, charting at #1 on iTunes rock charts, and #6 on the iTunes all-genre chart. And now, Oliver is gonna be performing it live as his friend Joe will be opening the doors of his Austin, Texas, comedy club, the Comedy Mothership, to its first ever musical show.
Oliver took to socials to deliver the news:
“I want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me. I know I haven’t put a lot of music out since ‘Richmond’…. to be honest, I’ve spent the past 6 months trying to reverse all the mistakes I made with my business the first year and a half, so I wanna start actually having some fun.
Next weekend I’m doing the [Comedy] Mothership. Their first music show there ever. I’ll be hanging out with Joe Rogan and who knows, there might be a camera there. Anything could happen.”
