New App Hides Unreleased Songs in Nature, Forcing Fans Outside to Listen

UK musician Nick Donovan, who performs as wildwildsky, has launched an innovative music discovery app that transforms the outdoors into an interactive record collection. The free app, also called wildwildsky, hides songs in specific geographic locations and requires users to physically visit them to unlock and hear the tracks.
Instead of drudgingly scrolling through endless Spotify playlists, users must venture into forests, beaches and hillsides armed with a map to discover geolocated music. Each song can only be played once at its designated location before vanishing forever, creating what Donovan calls “wonderfully finite” musical encounters.
The app’s current iteration requires zero personal data—not even an email address—and includes no in-app purchases, making it genuinely free to explore. For music lovers seeking adventure beyond their headphones, it offers a compelling blend of technology, artistry and outdoor exploration that rethinks how we discover music from our favorite artists.
“I wanted people to discover music as if it were an animal in the wild, tied to a place, momentary, and fleeting,” Donovan explained in a statement.
Funded by Arts Council England and National Lottery UK, wildwildsky currently features Donovan’s own compositions alongside tracks from other artists, both established and emerging. While initially limited to UK and Irish locations, Donovan said he’s planning to “expand to the whole world though with more artists and locations.”
