Last year, Allagash Antlers went viral for a scary run-in with an absolute smasher of a bull moose. And I just stumbled upon it again… still hard to believe the dude walked away mostly unscathed.
But despite the bumps and bruises, a viral video should be good news for business, right? The Instagram account, based out of Maine, specializes in handcrafting dog chews made from shed antlers… a pretty cool venture if I do say so myself. Although, getting the shed antlers proves to be a little more dangerous than you’d think.
I’d suspect the average person thinks of Canada or Alaska when it comes to moose habitat, and they’d be correct, but believe it or not, the state of Maine actually has one of the densest moose populations of anywhere in the world. With approximately 75,000 moose wandering around the state, Maine clocks in second only to Alaska in the United States, and of course, it’s much, much smaller.
Anytime you have that many animals living in relative proximity to humans, there is bound to be some interactions. And to be fair, moose are like most animals in the wild… they’d rather run away than try and fight, but they have been known to charge if they feel threatened. Sometimes they’ll charge if they’re hungry and exhausted from plowing through deep snow, and cows will also charge if they have a calf around. Moose don’t see very well either so sometimes they err on the side of caution and charge first, ask questions later.
But with mature bulls in Maine standing around 6 feet tall at the shoulder, wielding massive paddle like antlers and weighing between 900 and 1,500 pounds, they’re nothing to mess with.
In the video, you can see the big bull giving him some serious stank eye, almost reminiscent of Robert De Niro’s “you talkin’ me?” scene in Taxi Driver. The moose is just begging him for a reason, but at the end of the day… he didn’t really wait for one.
Our shed hunter tries to get a little vocal and back up, and all bets are off… the bull charges.
“Getting run over by a bull moose was not on my list of things to do today… Extremely lucky to escape with only a few bumps & bruises.”
Luckily, he only suffered minor injuries… Lord knows it could’ve been much worse.
Moose kicks have been know to break limbs and even kill people. Last year, a bull moose killed a 70-year old photographer in Alaska, and in North America, moose actually injure more people than bears and mountain lions combined every year. Part of that is attributed to car crashes… it’s far less common to hit a danger kitty with your car, you know?
But after all that, the least you could do is get a moose antler chew toy for your pup. Not an advertisement… I just think they’re cool…
And if you like seeing big bull moose, give him a follow… there are some absolute monsters in the feed. Luckily, he wasn’t railroaded by this beast.
