Matthew McConaughey has a knack for giving the people what they want, and returning to True Detective would certainly bring joy to the masses.

The talented actor, author, and Minister of Culture for the Texas Longhorns (that’s a more recent side quest of his) leads a rather busy life. He’s currently preparing to embark on a book tour for his new promote his new project Poems & Prayers. The 55-year-old is following up his wildly popular and best seller Greenlights, which he released in late 2020. While that book was more anecdotal, this one is described to be a “faith-filled” collection of poetry and written prayer.

Considering it’s from the mind of Matthew McConaughey, I’m sure it’ll be a page turner.

He’s just got that kind of allure, and that especially true when it comes to the projects in television and film that he chooses to be involved with. When McConaughey recently spoke with Variety, he provided some insight into how he selects characters to portray. For the actor, it all comes down to one simple question:

“Any character that I play, I always ask, ‘What’s their monologue?’ Whether it’s subtext or whether it’s spoken, you gotta have your monologue before you can say your dialogue.”

“Monologue before dialogue” is such a McConaughey saying.

Matthew McConaughey was speaking with Variety to help promote his role in the upcoming film The Lost Bus. But at one point, the conversation steered towards a show that really put the actor’s abilities on display: The anthology series known as True Detective. McConaughey and his good friend, Woody Harrelson, got the series started off on the right foot with a stellar, award-winning first season. Since it’s an anthology, a new cast and new story has taken place every season since, and Nicolas Cage was recently announced to be attached to the fifth season of True Detective.

McConaughey admitted that he loves the idea of seeing Nicolas Cage in the world of True Detective:

“He’s a great actor, and I’d like to see him in that world.”

You know another great actor that the masses would like to see in that world (again)? Matthew McConaughey.

Obviously, there’s a part of TV fans that don’t want to touch the perfection that was the show’s first season, starring McConaughey and Harrelson. But the idea of those two returning for another collection of episodes has been bounced around a lot, and this is the first time that the movie and TV star has actually entertained the thought of reprising his role as detective Rust Cohle:

“We nailed that first season. But if it’s a script like that first one, with that fire and originality, I’d do it. And you talk about monologues. Well, Rust Cohle had a monologue. He talked about everything that was inside him, and he didn’t care if you were listening or not. There’s freedom in that.”

Why do I think there’s a good chance that could actually happen?

It was made public that Nic Pizzolatto, who happens to be the creator of True Detective, will be working with McConaughey once again on a football drama project for Netflix – also starring Yellowstone‘s Cole Hauser. If Pizzolatto and McConaughey create another hit together, and have fun doing so… why wouldn’t they be encouraged to run it back with a sequel season to True Detective‘s inaugural run?
