Manchester United announce new change that will affect every season ticket holder after price hike
Manchester United will introduce a new identity verification system for season ticket holders in a bid to clamp down on touting. The move follows news that the Red Devils are increasing the price of season tickets by five per cent for the third year in a row. Ahead of the renewal period for season tickets, United will also introduce ID verification. The club have explained the move is in an attempt to tackle ticket touting at Old Trafford. A statement explained they aim to ‘ensure a safe stadium for fans to enjoy the game in’. Season ticket holders will be sent a link to upload a valid photo ID – passport or driving licence – and a take a live photo of themselves. Their ID will then be cross-referenced against the name and date of birth on the club’s system for the season ticket. Only once they have passed the ID check will fans be able to renew their season ticket for the 2025/26 campaign. United have reiterated, though, that there are no changes to the current system of season ticket transfers. Tickets will still need to be transferred to the friend or family member attending the match. They must have also verified themselves before being able to enter Old Trafford. These include family members using a relative’s season ticket or if a season ticket holder has died and passed it on to someone else. Meanwhile, chief executive Omar Berrada has defended the move to increase season ticket prices. Following 11 years of frozen prices, United are no increasing the cost to fans for a third successive season. However, there has been a price freeze for supporters aged 16 and under. Berrada explained: “We understand that any price rise is unwelcome, especially during a period of under-performance on the pitch, and we listened carefully to the strong arguments put forward by the FAB (Fan Advisory Board) in favour of a freeze. “However, the club has decided it would not be right to keep prices unchanged while costs rise and the club continues to face financial issues. “We have kept the increase to the lowest possible level and protected our youngest season ticket holders from any rises, while ensuring the club remains financially strong enough to invest in improving the team.” Other changes include a rise in car parking charges by 15 per cent as well as fans behind the dugouts being relocated. The club’s ‘senior’ discount will now be in line with the state pension age of 66 to give older fans 25 per cent off.
