Man United take shirt number off new signing and hand it straight to Benjamin Sesko

Benjamin Sesko’s Manchester United shirt number has been revealed. The £73million signing arrives from Leipzig and keeps his career long club number 30. In a very similar press release to the one which announced Sesko’s new digits, United did the same for Diego Leon on July 18. The Paraguayan wing-back arrived from Cerro Porteno and took No.30, even wearing it against Bournemouth and West Ham in pre-season friendlies. Eagle-eyed fans would have spotted something was up when Leon made his first Old Trafford appearance, walking out ahead of a friendly against Fiorentina in the No. 35. That return to the Theatre of Dreams saw Leon unveiled to the home crowd alongside his three new teammates, holding shirts without anything on the back of them. The other two new arrivals, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha also met fans and posed for the cameras, having taken No.19 and No.10 respectively. Leon is now listed as No.35, the number Johnny Evans vacated, while the club have confirmed one more switch. Fan favourite right back Diogo Dalot will trade in his No.20 for the No.2, picking it up from Victor Lindelof who departed on a free transfer. For Sesko, the No.30 won’t exactly bring too much pressure, with defenders Wes Brown and John O’Shea the most high-profile players to previously don it. Discussing his Swedish idol with the club’s website, he said: “He’s been my role model since I’ve been small. “I’ve been watching him, like every single YouTube video that I can find, because he’s just amazing.” Sesko has tentatively been compared to Ibrahimovic while playing in the Bundesliga thanks to his similarly lofty but athletic 6ft 5in frame and his propensity to score an array of technically challenging highlight-reel goals. Reflecting on the comparison, he said: “We don’t have the same, let’s say, character. “But I like to see him, the way he plays, the way he enjoys football, because that’s when all the joy comes. If you enjoy football, then everything works. And I think this is the most important. I’ve also been watching them, of course, on the videos. “They’ve been great, of course, you can admire them a lot and I try to also show myself in a good light here and try to help the team, try to help the club to be as high as possible.
