Mama Moose Turns Chase Around On Grizzly Bear Who Was Going After Her Calves

Humans and animals may differ in a multitude of ways, but there is one thing that both can agree on: You never mess with a mother.
That might as well be the “Golden Rule,” should it not? I feel confident in promising you (the reader) that your life will be easier if you don’t ever give a mom grief. The young but stout grizzly bear in this clip certainly would have benefited from knowing that rule, and ultimately learned that lesson the hard way.
Because it didn’t know that mothers are nothing to be messed with, the grizzly got all it could handle from a mother moose that was walking around in Chugiak, Alaska with her offspring. The bear was obviously tracking the mother and her two calves, following along closely as the family traveled together. The predator was certainly trying to separate the young from the mother to turn them into a meal.
But that wasn’t going to happen on the mother moose’s watch… she became fed up and went “full mom mode” on the bear.
When the grizzly bear got too close for comfort, the mama moose’s motherly instincts kicking in. A moose typically cares for and protects their calves for up to a year, and with the size of these two calves, they undoubtedly still needed their mom’s help. And I’d say they are very lucky to have such a fearless, protective mother on their side.
Just when you thought the grizzly was closing in, the mother moose put on a brave face and charged at the bear to scare it away. As far as the ruling classes of animal kingdom goes, you’d assume that a grizzly bear would have no issue taking down a moose. But let me remind you that it’s not always about height and weight. I hate to sound like a motivational poster, but sometimes it’s more about heart than anything else.
And good luck finding something with more heart than a mother acting to protect the things she loves the most.
The moose really turned on the jets chasing after the bear, and it didn’t take much pushback for the grizzly to abandon its interest in following the family of moose. Once she charged at the sizable bear and it ran away (unfortunately towards the Alaskan home that this video was being shot from), the mother turned back around and headed towards her calves to make sure they were safe. They all then likely continued on with their regularly scheduled moose activities.
Again, this just goes to show you that a mother will do anything to protect her offspring, even if that means running right at the face of one of the world’s fiercest apex predators. Generally speaking, there aren’t many animals tougher than a grizzly bear, and you won’t find many other predators that try to test them. That being said… this grizzly bear didn’t look all that fierce and tenacious when it had a steaming-mad-momma sprinting right at it.
