Luke Combs is currently sitting on a treasure trove of unreleased music… and one of those unreleased songs is evidently called “Breathing Underwater.”

How did the world find out that a Luke Combs song of that name never saw the light of day? YouTube golf, of course! What other way would a country music star break that kind of news? In 2025, you’ve got to be ready to get your news from anywhere.

And that’s a little scary, right?

Anyways, Luke Combs recently joined YouTube golf star Grant Horvat for an 18-hole, head-to-head matchup that was titled “Can I Beat Luke Combs If He Starts 30 Under Par?” For those that aren’t so sharp with golf terminology, just think of it as Luke getting a 30 shot head start, or cushion. Whichever description you prefer and/or more easily understand.

Though the video itself was entertaining, and I was rather impressed with Luke Combs’ golf game, there was one moment within the hour-plus long video that stood out to me. I personally love when YouTube golfers like Grant get non-golfers to join them, because really, the round of golf turns into somewhat of a long-form interview where the other person is able to get comfortable and open up more.

And later on in the video, Luke Combs opened up after Grant Horvat asked them this question in a somewhat joking fashion:

“I know you write a lot of your songs about life experiences, so I’ll be waiting about the song today. It would be a good one.”

Because Luke Combs started out his round hot, and had to fight to keep things together on the back nine, the country music star responded to that question with this:

“Survive. It’s gonna be called ‘Survive.'”

Hey, if Luke Combs can make a concept album about being a dad, surely he could whip one up about golfing, right?

As much as I’d love to hear “Survive,” Combs then quickly changed course and shouted out another song that he had actually already written… but never recorded or released:

“I wrote a song a couple of years back. I never recorded it, but it’s called ‘Breathing Underwater.’ That’s the name of it. It’s a pretty good tune. I just didn’t cut it. I haven’t cut it or anything.”

Bummer.

The YouTuber golfer asked a pretty good follow up question, inquiring whether Luke Combs has final say on a song or not, and if that’s what happened with the “Breathing Underwater” track that the country star mentioned:

“The only decision really. I lean on a lot of people, for sure, for opinions and stuff. But ultimately it comes down to me. I always tell people that what people are going to like… you just can’t really guess. You really can’t.

Some of my favorite songs on my records are the least streamed ones. I’ve been right on some, and then I’ve been like, ‘Man, I thought people would love that.’ Or I thought, ‘This song almost didn’t even make the album’ and it was a number one. It’s so weird how it works.”

Judging by how he spoke about “Breathing Underwater,” I’m guessing we shouldn’t expect it to pop up on his forthcoming album. However, now that it’s out in the open that it exists… Luke Combs fans will be clamoring for it until it does see the light of day.

Much like golf, waiting for one of your favorite artists to drop a song that’s been shelved for a while requires a tremendous amount of patience. The post Luke Combs Reveals He Wrote A Song Called “Breathing Underwater” That’s Never Seen The Light Of Day, & I Think We Need To Hear It first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
