Liverpool’s Champions League hero completed Nottingham Forest transfer from European giants
Nottingham Forest may rethink their interest in Jordan Henderson after the last ex-Liverpool Champions League winner they signed. Ahead of their first European campaign in 29 years, Forest have been linked with a move for Henderson, who will forever be indebted to Divock Origi for helping him lift UEFA’s biggest prize. Origi failed to find the back of the net in the Premier League for ForestGetty Ironically, considering the different ways the pair left Anfield for overseas, the Tricky Trees could offer both a Premier League lifeline. Origi proved a cult hero at Liverpool, scoring 41 times in 175 appearances in all competitions during his eight-year spell. Three of those goals proved decisive in Liverpool’s Champions League win in 2019, the only one lifted by Henderson in his career. Origi famously scored twice in the historic 4-0 second-leg comeback win over Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals. The first was a rebound from a Henderson shot, with the second being voted Liverpool’s greatest goal in its 130-year history by fans. The Belgian then left his mark on the final as well, bagging the club’s second in their 2-0 victory against Tottenham in Madrid. The striker exited Liverpool as a free agent three years later, with Henderson paying him a glowing tribute ahead of his final game. “His legacy will be his achievements for this club, but it will also be the good causes he has supported, like the local students he is helping to put through university,” Henderson penned in Liverpool’s match programme ahead of facing Wolves in May 2022. “Today should be a celebration, no matter what happens and as club captain, I will certainly be celebrating Divock and wishing him all the best for the future. The big fella deserves nothing less.” Henderson formed a guard of honour for Origi at Anfield that day, but a year later, failed to receive one himself after leaving Liverpool. Henderson played in 93 of Origi’s Liverpool appearances That was because the 35-year-old, who still had two-years on his contract, made the surprising switch to join Al Ettifaq in July 2023. Shortly into that summer’s pre-season, Henderson ended his 12-year tenure at Liverpool to reunite with Steven Gerrard in Saudi Arabia. In what could now be construed as ominous omens, Origi was on his way back to England three months later after a poor overseas stint. The forward managed a dismal two goals in 35 appearances for AC Milan and jumped at the option to join Forest on deadline day. Forest’s Chief Football Officer, Ross Wilson, said: “Divock returns to the Premier League to further add strength to our squad. “We wanted to bolster our attacking options, and Divock certainly helps us to do that.” Origi will forever be a cult hero at Anfield for his Barcelona heroicsGetty The Belgian also scored in the final to seal the Champions League under Jurgen KloppGetty Images Unfortunately, neither transfer paid dividends, with Origi failing to score a goal in his 20 Premier League outings in the 2023/24 season. Henderson was dropped for an Eredivisie fixture shortly after he joined Ajax, and came close to sealing a January move to Monaco. Henderson could leave Ajax this summerGetty Speaking on Breakfast, Brazil said: “I don’t want to have a go at Jordan… Because Jordan, when he first went [to Liverpool], I think Kenny [Dalglish] bought him, when he first went to Anfield, people weren’t that sure, and then he proved them wrong. “But he’s 35 now, I think Forest… no. Not for me. He’s had a brilliant career, not now.” Agbonlahor agreed, adding: “Not for me, no. I’m not sure the Premier League will suit him now. I get the Sunderland one. “He’s a Sunderland lad, I get that. But apart from that, I don’t think he’s making the cut.” Brazil continued: “That’d be ideal for him, Sunderland.
Ironically, considering the different ways the pair left Anfield for overseas, the Tricky Trees could offer both a Premier League lifeline.
