Kurt Russell Officially Joins The Cast Of Highly Anticipated ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff Series, ‘The Madison’

Another big star has joined the Yellowstone universe.
It seems like it’s every other day now that we hear about an A-list actor or actress signing on to be a part of a Taylor Sheridan project. That’s partially because a) there are so many good, quality shows that Sheridan currently has in production and b) it’s no secret that the projects the Yellowstone creator puts his name on are often very successful.
The main Yellowstone show might have ended, but the extended Taylor Sheridan universe is just getting started. One spinoff that’s really intrigued TV fans is The Madison, which already has Michelle Pfeiffer attached, and has reportedly already shot its first season. As far as plot is concerned, the series is supposed to revolve around the titular character of Stacy Clyburn, a wealthy matriarch who upends her life in New York City to move her and her family to Montana following a plane crash that kills her husband and brother-in-law.
They began filming the series in Montana in August of 2024, and sources say they shot more for the spinoff in Texas in November and December of last year as well. In fact, David Glasser, the CEO of 101 studios, recently said that The Madison was set to start shooting it’s second season in October of 2025… despite the first season not airing as of yet, and there not being an official order for the second season.
Which makes the timing of this cast addition a little confusing, but still important nonetheless. Hollywood star Kurt Russell, known for his iconic roles in Overboard (1987), Captain Ron (1992), Tombstone (1993), and The Hateful Eight (2015), has joined the cast of The Madison. Considering the timing of this announcement, it would be assumed that he’d be joining for the show’s second season… but it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he’d also be included in the western drama’s inaugural run.
This casting becoming official is also important for another reason. If you were to look at early reports about this sequel, many had the charming Matthew McConaughey attached to the role that is now presumably being filled by Kurt Russell. McConaughey’s connection to the series appeared to slowly dwindle over the past couple of years, and one can only assume that the show runners went with Russell instead, for whatever reason (possibly financial).
There were also rumblings that current Yellowstone stars Luke Grimes (who plays Kayce), Cole Hauser (who plays Rip Wheeler) and Kelly Reilly (who plays Beth) would transition over to the sequel series, but there’s no word or reporting on the involvement of those characters. When you factor in that all of those characters have their own spinoffs in the works (Grimes with Y: Marshals, and Hauser & Reilly with The Dutton Ranch), their casting in The Madison seems unlikely as well.
But the biggest news about the series by far is that Russell is officially joining, and presumably replacing McConaughey as the star. That being said, it’s also very possible that this is an independent spinoff, and that McConaughey could still still star in another modern-day spinoff of the original Yellowstone, perhaps the long-rumored 6666’s Ranch spinoff we’ve heard about for years now.
